Review: 1000 Home Ideas by Stafford Cliff
Whenever I have a big night out planned or an important dinner party coming up and feel in need of some sartorial inspiration, I pull out the lookbooks showing the latest styles from the catwalks and pore over the images of glamorous, perfectly put together models. 1000 Home Ideas provides an equivalent visual dreamscape for interiors and is the ideal starting point whether you’re about to attempt full scale redecoration or simply want to update your boudoir. Stafford Cliff’s sourcebook is richly illustrated with Christian Sarramon’s beautiful photographs and even if you’re not planning on redecorating any time soon, its a great coffee table book to peruse and drift off into “if only” My Perfect Home fantasies. “Will you choose minimalist simplicity or ordered chaos, traditional and classic, or modern and experimental?” asks Mr Cliff . As you delve into the pages filled with glorious images of other peoples’ dining rooms, bedrooms and kitchens, you will probably realise that you actually need two or three homes in order to fulfill all of your domestic desires.
The book isn’t divided into traditional room by room sections, instead considering the home in terms of different elements which could feature in any part of the house – “Walls of Wonder”, “Colour & Texture” and “Coveted Cupboards” for example. This helps you to think outside the box and really focus on what you find attractive and interesting and which elements work for you. The images are not organised into any particular groupings either which makes for eclectic, colourful pages and means that its easy to choose an aesthetic. Looking though 1000 Home Ideas it will quickly become apparent whether you prefer minimalist simplicity or ordered chaos!
From rustic homes, painted in deep ochres and earthy tones to sleek, monochrome interiors, rooms of every kind are shown and you can’t but be inspired by the endless variety of styles; there are 1000 ideas after all. Some innovative concepts feature too, such as a lamp positioned above a wetroom-style shower, creating rays of light from the running water or a focal point in a living room: a fire in a transparent glass vase. Never mind the paintings you haven’t got round to framing, one homeowner has created a different display using sumptuous, but empty, gilt-edged antique frames. Admittedly lots of the ideas might involve spending cash that you don’t have, but there are some purse-friendly designs too – what about transforming your bedroom with a simple headboard painted in a feature colour such as Klein blue? Or why not create some personalised art by cutting up and framing those well-loved garments that are beginning to wear thin?
If you’ve taken the plunge and moved in with your current squeeze, perusing the pages of 1000 Home Ideas will give you both some clues as to the other’s taste – it’s certainly more inspired than the same-old styles in the Ikea catalogue! Start saving up for that second home now…
