Paul Smith’s 9, Albemarle St – London

Posted in Domestic Goddess » Interiors » by Alice Revel :: April 20, 2009

psPaul Smith is best known for his quirky take on classic fashion pieces and must be one of the best-known British designers – he has been producing menswear collections for over 30 years. However like many in the world of fashion, Mr Smith has interests outside the scope of all things sartorial as you will see if you visit his boutique at 9, Albermarle Street in London. With his iconic and instantly recognisable stripe and floral patterns, Smith’s designs do conjure up thoughts of interior decoration.  He’s a bit like Laura Ashley’s cooler older brother. But this boutique is definitely not Paul Smith Home – Paul Smith Attic would be a better description. 9, Albermarle Street is a glorious collection of handpicked antiques, jewellery and unique objets d’art. Some are typical of the eccentric and very English style Smith projects but there are also echoes of the days of the British empire. You can find antique Chinese mirrors, paintings, Indian ornaments and if you’re looking for something really different, there are even chairs reupholstered in Paul Smith prints. Everything in the boutique is unique and the collection changes regularly. It’s a veritable treasure trove, admittedly without the attic sale price tag attached. But, like my gay best friend always tells me about his pair of Paul Smith shoes, it’s an investment!
