Ana Šekularac
Ana Šekularac is something of a phenomenon. Born in Putney, south-west London but of Serbian origin, she has lived the life of a top model including stints working for Miu Miu and Gianfranco Ferré, picked up degrees in Business Administration and Marketing and Fashion Styling, worked at Italian Cosmopolitan and Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper, has lived in London, Stockholm, Milan and Belgrade, and is fluent in English, Italian and Serbian. Boasting a killer combination of skill, industry experience and serious fashion savvy, Šekularac’s many talents have made her eponymous label one to watch.
Launched in Belgrade in 2005, Šekularac’s label is known for sharp tailoring, clean lines and a fresh approach to colour. Inspired by her travels, her designs are sharply feminine and take inspiration from the Art Deco period: think cocktail dresses with blunt, architectural winged shoulders, prim corset dresses with a burst of ruffles frothing out from underneath, severely tailored two piece evening suits in bold red and ball gowns with layer after layer of draped inky silk.
Ana creates her collections with couture style attention to detail. Working in an atelier and using a seamstress, each design is finished by hand to ensure the quality of her clothing is as strong as her vision. The ‘Ana Šekularac’ signature is her use of crimson and black as the main hues in every collection, but a third colour is often picked to set the mood.
Her first catwalk show at London Fashion Week in February 2007 was met with rave reviews and was picked up by Vogue and Glamour. Ana later contributed one of her stunning ball gowns to Naomi Campbell’s Fashion for Relief for The White Ribbon Alliance to help raise money for children in need after the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti in January 2010.
