Posted in Big Feature Box » by :: August 31, 2009

Summer is coming to an end and it’s time to update your wardrobe and your look. Neon eyes and bronzed skin might have been de rigueur poolside but it’s time for something new as chillier temparatures set in. But how to create these glamorous looks? Tried the smoky eyed style and been told you look like you could do with a coffee? Are you a victim of the ultimate cosmetic faux pas, lipstick on your teeth? Never fear, Running in Heels has come to your rescue with a roundup of the best (and most wearable) beauty trends of the coming season plus some foolproof instructions on how to recreate the looks care of youtube’s make-up experts.

Cheekbone Chiccheekbones

The most dramatically sculpted cheekbones were seen on the catwalk at Alessandro Dell’Acqua (see right) who used deep bronze and gold tones to paint on colour and add structure to the face. At Gucci a chiselled look was created with a sexy pop of bright red while at Chloe beautifully blended warm peach hues added to the 70s hippy luxe look of the show. The Illamasqua team are pros at showing how to create dramatic looks step-by-step and in this video they prove that (with a bit of practice) you too can look like you were born with the bone structure of a Russian model.

Sleek and Slickedsleek

If you’re rocking a killer outfit (or if you have fallen out of bed and have ten minutes to get ready…) what better way to show your clothes off than by paring back hair and makeup? Slicked back hair is a perennial catwalk favourite and it’s a style that can look chic, classic, edgy – you name it – depending on what you wear it with. At Stella McCartney and Alberta Ferretti models’ hair was slicked back and tied into simple buns, the latter adding wet look gel for a supershiny night time style. Yves Saint Laurent and Lanvin accessorised their sleek updos for a more chic and put-together look, and the most rock’n'roll slicked style was at Versace (see left) where hair was combed back with glossy gel and then left loose. In this short clip, the clever people at VideoHairstyles show you how to create the perfect sleek style which will look polished at work or play.

The Perfect Red Poutred lips

Strong lips were shown on many catwalks this season, providing the perfect cosmetic accompaniment to 1940s styling, monochrome outfits and looks with a sense of AW09 drama. In London, models on the Erdem catwalk only needed bright red lips, against natural skin and eyes, to set off his elegant and colourful collection. Dolce & Gabbana (right) also chose a sultry red-lipped look to accompany their dramatic show and in Paris, Elie Saab and Antonio Berardi’s models had perfectly defined sultry rouged pouts. Vibrant lipcolour is something which seems to frighten women today despite the fact that for our grandmothers growing up in the thirties, forties and fifties, the idea of leaving the house without lipstick was perhaps unthinkable. Youtube makeup guru xsparkage‘s tutorial features easy to follow tips on how to achieve the perfect red pout – your Grandma would be proud!

Doing the Updoupdo

Summer may have been all about romantic, loose, beachy styles but this season’s catwalks showed some seriously chic styles for AW09. Nothing says ladylike like an elegant updo and it’s ideal for a polished daytime look or a spot of sophisticated evening styling. In Paris, updos were volumised to the max at Louis Vuitton (left) with pretty, decoiffed beehives, whilst at Jean Paul Gaultier’s models showed off an updo with a punky twist. Meanwhile in London, Richard Nicoll’s show featured models sporting romantic but elegant French pleats and Nathan Jenden went for rock’n'roll styling with big banana rolls up top. In this tutorial Ford Artists‘ Mara Schiavetti shows how to achieve a light, textured updo. It’s a chic look for daytime or add a few shiny accessories for a touch of  evening glamour.

Smoking Hotsmoky eyes

What would nighttime makeup be without sexy smoky-eyed styles? Adding some smouldering shadow and liner is the simplest way to take a look from day to night too. At Bottega Veneta, the smoky eye was worn with deep, claret lips, creating a dramatic, gothic look while DSquared’s dark eyes were paired with a much more wearable nude lip, channelling a sex-kittenish, Brigitte Bardot vibe (see left). Models at Vivienne Westwood showed not one, but two of this season’s trends, with strong brows accompanying a sultry, deep blue shadow. Loewe’s leather looks were given an edgy, biker twist with smudgy, inky tones on the eyes – you wouldn’t want to mess with this bad girl. MAC Pro makeup artist, Chantel Miller explains the ABC of smoky eyes so that you’ll end up looking sultry and sexy. Plaiting and Pleatingplait

For many of us, plaits bring back memories of our tender years of styling. Never fear, just as we have grown up, so have they and plaits are a great way of getting creative with longer length hair. At Margaret Howell, models wore pretty and chic updos with plaiting details and at PPQ (left) rocked long, lustrous Rapunzel-style single braids. On the catwalks of Milan, models at Dolce & Gabbana wore hair twisted and pleated into low buns and at Bottega Veneta hair was pleated into a chic roll at the nape and adorned with gem-encrusted accessories. Meanwhile Topshop Unique took us back to our days of playing hairdresser with models sporting multiple plaits with interlaced brightly coloured ribbons – perhaps one look you shouldn’t really wear to work…Canadian youtube guru Lucy has some interesting and easy-to-follow tutorials and this rope-braid updo is a sexy and chic way of updating a childhood trend.
