Le Freak: C’est Chic

Posted in Fashionista » Brands » by :: October 19, 2010

French wigmaker and hairdresser Charlie Le Mindu went from working at an old ladies’ hair salon in Paris to sending naked girls down this season’s LFW runway in his scandalous and drop dead sexy creations. His latest was an unapologetic celebration of in-your-face tackiness, L.A excess and raunch culture, and included a pink leopard printed wig/dress, and a bra made from beaming headlights. Fans include Kelis, Amber Rose and Lady Gaga – the latter often seen wearing his surrealist hairpieces. We caught up with him to talk about his style, the women who inspire him and most of all, his love of all things follicular…

That flamingo dress for S/S 2011

Have you always been obsessed by hair?

Yes since I was born – my daddy was so hairy! Then after that I was crazy about Barbies, especially their hair (I had to shave them!) and when I was about 10, I experimented on my friend with different shades of food colouring. So yes I am obsessed with hair!

What’s been the highlight of your career so far?

I think it has to be meeting my friend [stylist] Anna Trevelyan. It was a turning point in my career, as she now does the styling for my shows. I’m a great admirer of her work!

Where do you get your influences from?

From my friends, from films – especially those by filmmaker John Waters – and possibly architecture.

How would you describe your signature style?

It depends, but I think the main thing is very sexy. Maybe a stripper with very chic clothes on!

Who are your icons?

I would say Cher, Grace Jones and Lolo Ferrari!

Were you prepared for the reaction towards your latest catwalk show?

Not at all. I didn’t think naked girls could shock so many people. They’ve been used in the art industry for decades, so why do fashion people have a problem with it? I don’t care – everyone likes to see naked girls, as they’re beautiful, but I did find funny the reaction towards it.

What looks from that show were you particularly proud of?

I think it was the pink flamingo hat and dress [pictured.] I love it lots!

What other projects do you have coming up?

I’m working with Disneyland Paris at the moment for a Christmas event but am also participating in an exhibition at the Barbican this month. I also have a big project coming up with Urban Retreat at Harrods.

Charlie Le Mindu’s Pop-Up Salon will take place this month at Machine-A, Berwick Street, Soho. For appointments contact ella@machine-a.com.

About the Author

Viola often identifies with the story of The Woman Who Lived in a Vinegar Bottle, whose protagonist would always moan about her lot in life, even after getting whatever it was she thought would make her happy. She is currently trying to carve a writing career, and has been published in GLASS Online and ARISE Magazine. She deals with editors’ rejections by going shopping - her North London flat is full of various vintage bargains she has amassed over the years (and is the reason she can't get a mortgage.) She occasionally thinks it would be nice to move to the country, have an aga and read Nancy Mitford all day, but then realises she would probably miss her beloved London, with its celeb-spotting opportunities, the Tate Modern, designer sample sales and buses that turn up more than once an hour.
