Ah we do so love a modern twist on a classic - and perhaps even more so when it comes to cocktails. These two summery cocktails have been dreamed up by the creative bartenders at the Hyatt Regency London’s charming Churchill Bar & Terrace - a chic spot located a hop and a skip away from the hullabaloo of Oxford Street. The bar draws on British heritage to inspire its cocktail list, of which these two moreish summer sips are fine examples.
First up, a fresh take on the classic spritz, made with aromatic sloe gin and a hint of bitters - a foolproof recipe if you’re not an expert mixologist. And then there’s the Churchill’s version of refreshing summer favourite, Pimm’s. Serve the Portman Summer Cup with strawberries, slivers of cucumber and orange slices - perfect for an elegant picnic in the park.
Sloe Gin Spritz
The Sloe Gin Spritz is a Venetian classic with a very British revamp. Sipsmith’s Sloe Gin is blended with Lillet Blanc and bitters before being topped with sparkling wine – a rich aperitif suitable for any time of day!
35 ml Sipsmith Sloe Gin
25ml Lillet Blanc
20ml Lemon Juice
15ml Sugar Syrup
3 drops Plum Bitters
3 drops Orange Bitters
Pour all ingredients into a large wine glass, add plenty of ice and top up with sparkling wine. Garnish with a twist of lemon.
The Portman Summer Cup
The Portman Summer Cup has a Hendricks Gin base and is flavoured with The Churchill’s secret blend of herbs, spices and fruit, topped with cloudy lemonade.
150ml Hendricks Gin
200ml Antica Formula
20 dashes Angostura Bitters
30 dashes Orange Bitters
360ml Water
150ml fresh Lemon Juice
210ml Sugar Syrup
Pour into a soda syphon, carbonate and add fruits and spices as desired. Chill the syphon before serving, pour into glasses and top with cloudy lemonade. If you don’t have a syphon, you can use a pretty jug instead.
