The Running in Heels Feelgood Playlist

Posted in Big Feature Box » by :: September 28, 2009

With chilly days drawing in and summer holidays but a distant memory, now is probably right about when a case of the autumnal blues may be setting in. We all deal with feeling down in different ways, be it via the purchase of shiny new shoes or the wolfing of tubs of  Ben & Jerry’s but a spot of music is a cheap and figure-friendly option! The Running in Heels team has put together a list of our favourite feelgood tracks – bound to cheer you up and make you feel ready to face the world again – with a smile on your face! The whole playlist is available in all its cheery glory on youtube or on Spotify

Baba O’Riley – The Who

From the oh-so-recognisable intro with its synth, piano and drums to the lyrics “I don’t need to fight, to prove I’m right. I don’t need to be forgiven”, this is the track that will pick you up and put you back on your feet every time!

Disco 2000 – Pulp

Evenings spent behind the bar always ended on a high – the last customer would leave, this track would play and we’d shout the words before getting the clean-up underway!

Chosen by Monique

Sound and Vision – David Bowie

Anything by Bowie makes me feel just great, and I don’t think I need to explain you why, I am sure you can figure it out yourselves.

Chosen by Valeria

Manic Depression – Jimi Hendrix

Bizarre choice, I know, given the title n’all, but whenever them pesky blues descend upon yours truly, the feverish lashing and drive on Jimbo’s guitar never ever fails to shake me right out of my psycho-gloop. Instructions: stand in front of your mirror, strap on your favourite air guitar and lick your downer outta town.

California – Joni Mitchell

Joni’s soprano in this cheery eulogy to her home state from a park bench in Paris never fails to make me smile and warm my heart. Despite the undercurrent of the Vietnam war and the fact that she had her camera pinched, Ms Mitchell proves that there’s always a way to stay upbeat.

Animotion - ObsessionObsession – Animotion

Heady mix of 80s beats, trumpet synth and memories of the former life of Mickey Rourke. A very sexy song!

Chosen by Nina

Drops of Jupiter – Train

This is ‘my coming home from travelling song’ that I always put on my iPod as I walk through the arrivals door in the airport. For me it perfectly encapsulates how you feel when you arrive home after experiencing new things and I absolutely love the opening line ‘Guess who’s back in the atmosphere, Drops of Jupiter in her hair hey hey hey hey.’ The song is written from the perspective of the guy who was left behind and though he’s kind of cynical about what she experienced ‘when she was looking for herself out there’ he’s still there waiting for her nevertheless. A beautiful song.

Chosen by Jenny

Brown Eyed Girl – Van Morrison

This doesn’t really make sense because I have brown eyes…but it’s guaranteed to put a smile on my face and have me singing along! I think it’s the sha la la bit that gets me every time!

Chosen by Courtney

Les Fleurs – 4hero

Nostalgia plays a big part in this choice – the song reminds me of being in college, but it’s just really uplifting anytime. The build up to to the chorus is great to let yourself go to! Of course I like the instrumentation and the full sound, it’s well written for a pop song.

Chosen by Ruth

You Make My Dreams Come True – Hall & Oates

From the infectious opening right through to the very end, this track makes me feel exactly like Joseph Gordon-Levitt after he pulls Zooey Deschanel in (500) Days of Summer. Shamelessly, and amazingly, cheesy.

We Are Golden – Mika

Great tune if you’re a fan of pop music and are in need of a little energetic pick-me-up during the day. Catchy and fun, the song, like the music video, will make you want to dance around your room in your underwear and sparkly trainers… or maybe just smile as you watch Mika do it.

Chosen by Emily

Love at First Sight – Kylie Minoguekylie

There is something about the whole Fever album that brings back fond memories of the carefree and fun days of my early 20′s. With it’s infectious chorus, breezy sugary upbeat dance groove, you can’t but feel good when listening to Love at First Sight. The whole album is an homage to the intoxicating feeling of being in love.

My Girl – The Temptations

The reason I love this song is being a huge fan of Motown, I think the Temptations are one of the groups that really represent the era, also the song is instantly uplifting and always has me wanting to break out into song and dance.

Chosen by Richelle

Non, Je regrette rien – Edith Piaf

This song soaks you with hope when you’re feeling blue, and crystallizes joy when you’re feeling pink. It’s got the unique gift of making you feel that mistakes are not burdens, but rather gems you gather to pave the road your life. It reminds you that you wouldn’t be you if you had done things any differently… that we are beautiful because we are flawed, not despite of it.
