Trends: On the Fringe of Fashion

Posted in Fashionista » by Aimee Steen :: July 23, 2009

cheryl-colePioneered by big names, the tassle trend has been hovering around for the past year or so and looks like it’s here to stay. The design has popped up on every piece of clothing imaginable, from earrings to shoes and everything in between.

Cheryl Cole is a fan, and was recently spotted en route to her birthday do at Vanilla in a very revealing cut-out 1920s style floral dress, complete with fringing. Admirers of the look can buy this Alexander McQueen dress for a mere £2915.50 at www.netaporter.com. And that’s the price on sale…

Cheryl’s not the only celeb to try out the trend. Jourdan Dunn has been spotted sporting both tassled boots and a fringed skirt, and Poppy Delevigne recently appeared in New York at a charity event wearing an Alberta Ferretti flapper dress.

On the catwalk, fringing and tassles were seen at Jil Sander, Alberta Ferretti, Hermes and Balenciaga as well as Alexander McQueen, and ranged from dramatic designs to pretty flapper styling.

So do you need to spend a fortune on designer clothes to get on board? The key to tassles is to keep it minimal – in the same way that you wouldn’t go out dressed head-to-foot in leopard print, fringing is best used minimally for dramatic effect. A few pieces can transform an outfit from ordinary to on-trend, and there are plenty out there to choose from.

On-trend internet shopping fave, ASOS, has some won’t-break-the-bank tasselled pieces; if you’re heading to the beach, what about a bikini with fringing? Or perhaps try their chic and sexy fringed kaftan and pair with some enormous gold accessories for poolside glamour. For an fringed-dressevening look, Vanessa Bruno’s black silk dress is the ultimate in flapper style, or for a daytime twist on the fringing trend, White Trumpet’s Fringed T’-Shirt Dress would look great layered over skinny jeans or leggings, teamed with gladiator sandals or ballet pumps.

If you are really feeling the financial squeeze, why not try a spot of DIY trend creation? A couple of curtain tassels added to a slouchy bag would be a lowkey, hippy-luxe way to pull it off. Or if you’re really lazy (or can’t sew/stick to save your life), it’s as easy as buying a couple of silk curtain tie-backs; thread through belt-loops with jeans or try belting your favorite jersey or t-shirt dress. If you are a whizz with a sewing machine, buy some contrasting fringing and add to a plain singlet to a create a sexy “sleeve”.

Whether you’ve choose the pricey McQueen version or opt for some DIY fashion fabrication, make sure you move. Show off the trend to best effect with some serious shimmying!
