Shooting Palermo: Giuseppe Napoli
This month’s Running in Heels cover story was shot by Giuseppe Napoli in Palermo. We took a sneaky peak behind the scenes…
Who was involved?
Giuseppe Napoli – Photographer
Seldom without a camera slung around his neck, Giuseppe Napoli can be seen snapping away at Palermo’s coolest parties, taking photos of the colourful sights in the streets of Sicily’s vibrant and colourful capital or zipping around on his BMW R100RS motorbike. A law student by day, he spent a year in Barcelona becoming especially interested in capturing images of the city from old ladies on the beach to Barca’s fascinating architecture. Inspired by figures including Mother Teresa, the Marquis de Sade and Hedi Slimane, his photos show the influence of Helmut Newton and a grungy glamour typical of the 1970s. He was taking pics at the Wintercase Electro Festival the night before the shoot – well done Peppe!

Marta Mancuso – Make-up Artist
Marta used MAC’s 2008 collections to create the looks for the photoshoot – in particular the Cool Heat teal and blue shades and Naughty Nauticals liners – a similar dramatic style was seen at Frankie Morello’s SS08 show. She couldn’t live without her traincase and bemoans the lack of a MAC store in Palermo, buying most of her cosmetics on ebay or via telephone – the staff in MAC’s Brera store in Milan know the sound of her voice! A fan of New Order, Sofia Coppola’s ‘Marie Antoinette’ and Favignana, a glorious paradise on Sicily’s coast, she can be found most Fridays sipping cocktails and gossiping outside I Chiavettieri in Palermo. Marta definitely knows how to run in heels, even on the cobbled streets of Palermo, in the rain, in platform shoes!
Giulia Tetamo – Model
Giulia studies fashion in Milan and says that she couldn’t live without her friends, vintage clothes, American Apparel and, budget permitting Marni, Marc Jacobs, Dries Van Noten and Chanel. The photoshoot took place at her family’s villa in Mondello, just near Palermo and she was involved in some of Giuseppe’s very first photo shoots. Giulia’s really into her music and at the moment she’s got the Juno soundtrack on replay – if she had to take one book to a desert island it would be Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity. She loves her family, travelling and obviously runs in heels without any problems. One of Sicily’s most glamorous blondes.
Valeria Triolo – Model
Totally stunning and typically Sicilian, Valeria has recently left her home in Palermo to seek her fortune in the eternal city – Rome, although she spent all last summer enjoying the delights of Berlin, a city “full of art, architecture, history and people who smile all the time!” She’s also a fan of vintage and mixing pieces inherited from her mother with basics from American Apparel. She loves Freddy Mercury, New Order, Radiohead and The Beastie Boys and would take all seven Harry Potter books to a desert island. Her favourite movie is Nosferatu and she reckons she’ll probably be working in a circus as a clown five years from now!
Carlo Bisulca – Model

Partyboy Carlo didn’t go home until the wee small hours pre-shoot and still managed to pull off handstands! He studies communication in Palermo and would like to work in cultural organisation later on. Carlo’s friend know him as l’Inglese (The English Boy) but it has to be said that his idea of manners leaves something to be desired of…A permanent fixture on Palermo’s party circuit, he’s also a Miles Davis fan when he’s not recovering from a hangover with a good plate of pasta con i ricci.
