The Glass Ceiling
In the burly world of finance, City Girls need to work twice as hard as men for their bonus. But during the credit crisis, they work twice as hard to keep their jobs. There’s been a kind of “thickening” of the glass ceiling as a consequence of this economic downturn. In turbulent times, companies tend to fall back on the traditionally “male” traits in order to “survive,” leaving women below that glass ceiling once again.
When forced to choose, City managers tend to save the men who have families over the women who don’t. And if that’s true, then women are still getting the short end of the stick when the economy tanks.
In the City of London, women make it by being infinitely tougher than the boys. Those who can stick it out will be beautifully poised to conquer once the market rebounds. Women have the brainpower, endurance and grace needed to fix what the boys have busted.
We’ve gone from millennia of being excluded from the City and ignorance on money to the imperfect few decades that City Girls have managed to infiltrate the boy’s club. City Boys are gradually coming to the realization that their world of finance needs the membership of ladies to prosper in every way. Things will even out eventually. It’s just a matter of time.
