Inverni's super cute pom pom beanie

Inverni's super cute pom pom beanie

If your accessorising regime consists of spangly bracelets, beaded necklaces and glam brooches, then it’stime to think it over and let your hair in on the action too. This season, there are plenty of ways to treat your tresses to a bit of bling and give your look an eye-catching twist. Here are Running In Heels’ top hair accessories and hats come day or night.

By Day

Woolly beanies

A woolly hat is every girl’s staple wardrobe item when the colder weather takes a hold. Miss Sixty’s Chunky Luxury Brooch Hat is both cosy and cute, and is available to order direct from the fashionista website, ASOS. Beanies are fantastic for those not-so-great hair days too! If you’re looking to spend a little more, Italian brand Inverni do some knitted beanies with fur pom poms which are absolutely adorable yet totally chic.

Braids

Headbands, such as Rachel Leigh’s cream suede braided band (handmade in New York), are all the rage at the moment and can instantly transform your slicked back ponytail into something with a little more panache. This would be a stand-out piece to wear with a simple office outfit, or even at the weekend dressed down with jeans and a check shirt for a 60s hippy vibe.

Alice bands

Alice bands –such as this plum velvet headband from Marc at Marc Jacobs – are cute, fun and an easy way of pulling off some 80s style. Whether its silky satin, funky plastic or glistening metallic – there’s an Alice band to suit everyone, come work or play. If they’re good enough for the Queen of Upper East Side chic, Blair Waldorf, they’re good enough for us mere mortals! If Blair’s bands are a little too staid for your taste, try Cristian Dorigatti‘s accessories. These pieces will add a touch of tough chic – they’re adorned with rubber bows; perfect for a spot for biker styling.

Sequinned berets

UK high-street retailer, Dorothy Perkins, is the place to go for some sparkly sequin berets. Great for keeping your hair in place in the blustery weather and stylish to match! Wear during the day for this season’s subtle sequins trend, or this would be the perfect finishing touch to a glam evening ensemble. All over sequins look a little too disco? Catherine Malandrino’s gold lurex braided beanie is a future classic you’ll wear again and again – well worth the investment.

Chunky headbands

For an accessory that’s both pretty and functional, try a woollen headband – we’ve found a fantastically cute one from Lowie, adorned with a crocheted bow detail. It makes a good alternative to a conventional hat for keeping your head snug in the colder weather, plus if you’re planning on hitting the slopes, this will guarantee you’ll be the coolest ski bunny en piste! If you’re keen on keeping your ears warm, go for some earmuffs – these ones are chic rather than childlike, we promise. These taupe sheepskin earmuffs from Karl Donoghue scream Gstaad sophistication.

velvet boutique hair comb

Add a hair comb for daytime glamour

Combs

This beautiful turquoise green hair comb, available from Velvet Boutique, is studded with a tin flower and would instantly glam up your hairdo for a Christmas lunch or special get-together over the New Year. Accessorize’s Pearl Butterfly comb is another sophisticated choice with a touch of art deco style.

By Night

Trilbys

Make a statement with Bernstock’s wool felt trilby hat, complete with this season’s key look – sequins. Team with a trouser suit for a more masculine twist to your ensemble. Alternatively, Eugenia Kim’s black rabbit fedora is uber cool – with a flash of bright blue trim, you’re sure to turn heads.

Bows and lace

Add a splash of colour and 80s chic to your partywear this season with a Lace and Net Bow Headband from Helene Berman. The oversized purple bow is set on an Alice band, which means it’s easy to wear and the overhanging net looks tres sophisticated too. Looking to invest in headpiece couture? Choose a band from Benoit Missolin; the French designer has some seriously luxe pieces, including this amazingly adorned band in black and red with wool and silk accents.

november fascinator

Catarina Vassalo's fascinator

Vintage

Portuguese designer, Catarina Vassalo, is behind this exquisite fascinator, entitled November Blue. It features peacock feathers, a natural brass ornament and original vintage lace, making it ideal for more glamorous affairs over the Christmas period. Check out Eva London for more fabulous fascinators – we love their “Kate, Sadie and Madge” piece with netting and butterflies.

Corsages

A corsage, such as this black lace style by Johnny Loves Rosie, will add a luxurious touch to your hairstyle. Or go for something with a hint of 1980s styling – Topshop’s lace corsage headband looks very Madonna circa Like a Virgin! Be inspired and try experimenting with different sized flowers and colours to coordinate with your wardrobe. Corsages are incredibly versatile and you’ll find that they look great on lapels and waistbands as well as on your head! Wear hair slicked back for a sexy style, or loose and curly for a more romantic look.

Feathers

Feathers were big on the catwalk this season and Reiss‘ striking dark feather Kiara headband will add a subtle, fashionable finish to your outfit, contrasting best with blonde locks and red tresses. The headband is also offered into a snow-white version with brown accents or if you’re looking for something a little more dramatic, try one of the brand’s feathered headpieces, which will add a touch of vintage glamour to your outfit. For total luxe styling, choose a feather and crystal headpiece from Karin Andreasson – the nude-coloured plumes will look stunning and simply ooze sophistication.

Pearls and beads

Made from glass pearls and beads, this gorgeous Bambou Feather Headpiece from Maison Michel teeters on the pricey side (at £395) but would make a stunning hair accessory come the twilight hours. Maison Michel’s beaded creations have been seen on Lou Doillon and Milla Jovovich and the fashion house has been making hats and headpieces since 1936, so they certainly know their stuff! On the other hand, if you’re looking for something that won’t break the bank, Accessorize’s Poppy Jewel band is adorned with dark, gothic-style gems which are absolutely on-trend. The brand also offer some cute pearl-gold slides – perfect for low-key glamour.

Fun and fancy dress

You may have scoffed when you saw Madonna sporting a head band with bunny ears, but these crazy accessories have proved to be all the rage this season! One of these bands might not be a piece that you will still be wearing this time next year, so choose Topshop’s cheaper version, with nude bunny ears and sexy net accents. Alternatively Benoit Missolin’s band with pom pom “ears” is a luxe, fun version of the trend.
