Less Is More
When it comes to your beauty routine, sometimes less really is more. We’ve all had one of those moments when we want to throw all of the toys out of the pram and start again; go back to the absolute basics and just find the products that really work.
Less Is More is an Austrian organic haircare company that offers all-natural products based on ‘functionality and aesthetics, respect for the environment and the pleasure of indulgence, beauty and health’. The brand began its life in the Less Is More salon in Vienna where hairstylist Hannes Trummer and chemist Doris Brandhuber wanted to create haircare with a simple, highly-functional concept that wouldn’t harm the environment. Research took place in the salon, with customers as guinea pigs for Hannes’ naturally-formulated products!
Ingredients are obtained from renewable sources and certfied organic growers wherever possible, and are chosen because they are effective and won’t have a negative impact on either the environment or the body. Pure essential oils are used to create delicious, indulgent scents so that going organic doesn’t mean compromising on the pleasure a beauty product should give; thus explaining the brand’s name – less is more!
The line comprises shampoos, conditioners and styling solutions as well as a small selection of bodycare products. In-salon research means that you can choose haircare to cater for your specific concerns, whether you suffer from an irritated scalp, need to target dry ends or boost shine.
We tried the Aloe Mint Shampoo which smells gloriously fresh; it’s suitable for frequent use too, so if you’re looking for a little boost of energy in your daily shower, this is the one for you. The shampoo contains aloe vera and honey to moisturise plus invigorating essential peppermint oil to tone the scalp. It really does leave hair feeling super clean and beautifully shiny. It’s particularly suitable for fine hair as the wheat proteins in the shampoo give natural volume and although it adds moisture, the ingredients won’t weigh hair down.
Made with chitin, orange blossom water, silk protein and rose water, Chitinspray offers light hold and gives hair a healthy dose of shine. We found that this product would be best used as a shine spray as if you’re looking for something to hold hair in place, this is probably a little too gentle. You can also use the Chitinspray when drying hair; not only does a spritz of this product smell gorgeous, it creates a radiant, glossy appearance too.
We also tested the intriguingly-named Silkfluid; a styling cream designed for texturising and adding definition. With silk protein, shea butter and honey, this is a lovely product for taking care of dry ends and you can use it to define curls or protect hair when blow-drying. A little goes a long way, but a pearl-sized amount does seem to boost shine and as with the shampoo, the scent is really lovely. It’s a sultry perfume based on ylang ylang essential oil and Sicilian orange; in this case it’s a shame that less is more as we’d happily use a whole bottle of this just for its fragrance!
If you’re a fan of the natural and moreish scents of the Less Is More range, you can try the brand’s bodywash and bodycream range. The cocktail of grapefruit and cardamon in the intensive bodycream is the perfect mixture of fresh and sensual, plus the cocoa butter and coconut oil offer intense hydration.
Less Is More get extra brownie points for their packaging design too; admittedly there’s no compromise on function here, but the sleek black and white graphics are modern and very cool.
On initial judgement the brand may seem rather enigmatically-titled, however having tried the products and found that they offer effective haircare, natural ingredients and delicious aromas; we get it – Less Is More!
