Five of our Favourites… London Hotels for World Cup Watching

Posted in Jetsetter » Features » by :: June 15, 2010

The screening room at One Aldwych

Luxury hotels may not be the first place you’d think of heading to watch the World Cup, but if the thought of lager-soaked carpets and throngs of drunken revellers is too much to bear, the capital’s finest five-stars are a more than attractive option.

There’s no danger of missing out on any of the atmosphere, either. With carefully tailored packages and private screening rooms on hand, whether you fancy joining Joe Public in a character-filled pub or hosting your own party for friends, we have stellar list of football-savvy London hotels to recommend…

The Private Cinema

One Aldwych – Covent Garden

Campbell Gray’s One Aldwych is no ordinary urban hotel; sitting pretty in Covent Garden, it bridges the gap between the West End and City, with ultra-luxe interiors and witty modern art installations at every turn (the Beano-covered Labrador sculpture by Justine Smith is a particular favourite of ours).

The hotel has its own cinema that’s stocked with all manner of goodies, including Dolby Digital surround sound and HD Blu-Ray technology. Book the World Cup Package and watch your chosen match in screening room splendour, accompanied by a selection of hearty snacks including fish pie, chunky chips and chocolate brownie cake.

Private screening of matches from £60 per person, including two bottles of beer per person (minimum 20, maximum 30 guests). Call +44 (0)20 7300 0700 to book or see online here.

The One for WAGs

Brown’s Hotel – Mayfair

Part of the Rocco Forte group, Brown’s Hotel is a London institution. It is seriously high-end, but manages to temper this with an unpretentious atmosphere; for all its luxurious amenities and smartly attired staff, heading down to Brown’s to watch a match seems an appealing prospect.

The hotel’s legendary Donovan Bar is serving up burgers and bookmaker sandwiches to accompany the games, but it’s the alternative “Fabulous Fun, Not Football” package that will have caught would-be WAGs’ attention. Designed to keep the girls happy, it includes an elegant afternoon tea in the English Tea Rooms or a three-course lunch at Hix, plus manicures and martinis in the spa.

“Fabulous Fun, Not Football” package from £90 per person (lasts 90 minutes). Call +44 (0) 20 7493 6020 to book, or see online here.

Catch the football at The George

The Old-Fashioned Pub

Andaz Liverpool Street -  Shoreditch

One of the easiest hotels in London by far to find – and this is particularly helpful on merry match days – simply exit Liverpool Street Station and look to your right; that handsome red-brick building houses the Andaz, a boutique-style luxury hotel with all the trimmings.

Not many of London’s hotels boast a bona fide pub, but The George wins hands-down for winsome surroundings without a hint of Wetherspoons. It offers live sports screening (one of the few pubs in the area to do so) and is showing all of the World Cup matches.

The George is open to the non-residents; rooms at the hotel start at £164.50 per night. Booking is available online here.

The Perfect Party for Friends

Jumeirah Carlton Tower – Knightsbridge

The Jumeirah Carlton Tower is the place to head if you’re easily bored. It has every conceivable amenity and then some, from an extensive health spa to a golf simulator. With a hotel this large, there’s plenty of scope for a memorable World Cup party.

The hotel has a great package on offer until July 11th; a private screening room for a minimum of eight people, plus a buffet of homemade pies, mini-burgers, wraps, salads and desserts (drink packages are available too). It takes the stress out of hosting your own at home, for a reasonable price.

May Fair's glamorous Schiaparelli Suite

Private parties available from £40 per person, excluding drinks. Call +44 (0) 20 7858 7171 to book, or see online here.

The Exclusive Suite Retreat

The May Fair – Mayfair

The May Fair opened with a bang and shows no signs of slowing. Beloved of the capital’s fashionistas and socialites, it is a proper party hotel and perfect for those who think a low-key World Cup simply isn’t worth having.

It comes as no surprise that this celeb-savvy hotel has dreamt up the most exclusive World Cup package in the city; together with iconic eatery Nobu, it is holding private parties in one of its five signature suites for up to 120 people. Expect achingly cool cuisine, exquisite deco and an uninterrupted view of the footie.

Prices on request, contact Patrick Katzenberg or call +44 (0) 20 7769 3062 for more details.
