Magathèque: Volume 5
Let’s face it – autumn is a bit of a non-season; we’re lamenting the passing of summer and anxious that it’s not quite snowy winter. Every day poses a risk of putting on something too warm, or not warm enough, and second to watching the leaves change colour, the days’ greatest distraction is thinking about forthcoming Christmas parties. This month’s Magathèque is ready to shake things up by reminding you of a time before you even noticed the seasons, or counted up how many days holiday you had left to take before the end of the year – that sacred period of adolescence. Our clips this month present juvenile delinquency in its prime – kids breaking free of the rules and veering off the rails, or at least slightly off the beaten track. We’ve embedded the videos this month to make viewing easier, but for the ultra-lazy among you, you can make them play one after another automatically on our YouTube playlist here.
Human – music video for Carpark North by Martin de Thurah
Danish director Martin de Thurah has behind some of the coolest videos for the coolest bands in recent years – Royksopp, Fever Ray and Palace Players among others – and recently collected the coveted best director accolade at the UK Music Video Awards. His previous life as a painter is tangible in his music videos, which often display particularly stunning cinematography. I don’t know much about Eastern European education, but they seem to produce some of the coolest primary school kids ever, if his video for Carpark North is anything to go by.
Heartbreaker – music video for MSTRKRFT feat. John Legend by Vincent Haycock
I think that every time I watch this, I fall in love a little bit more with our longer haired male protagonist whose chance at a kiss with the toy store’s cashier is cruelly stolen by his friend and the circumstances. Capturing the spirit of a lazy afternoon in sunny Los Angeles that breeds the need to do something just a little crazy, John Legend’s smooth vocals over supercool duo MSTRKRFT’s dirty beats is a heady mix.

Heavy Metal Drummer – short film by Toby MacDonald and Luke Morris
This short film from 2006 was brought life by rising director Toby MacDonald and his producer/director friend Luke Morris (who is also the man behind the excellent Cinema16 short film collections). Creating a perfect blend of Western and Middle Eastern cultures, this short tale tells of a young Moroccan lad whose inner Heavy Metal Drummer is threatening to break free – and of course does so and a particularly inappropriate moment.
If I Know You – music video for The Presets by Eva Husson
Another Los Angeles setting for this track from rising Australian band The Presets, and a classic example of how the right director can transform a simple idea into something absolutely hypnotizing. Blending a dash of Billy Elliott with a dollop of West Side Story, Husson manages to make us all want to put a bags down, forget where we were supposed to be going and just start dancing.
Luv Deluxe – music video for Cinnamon Chasers by Saman Keshavarz
The frighteningly young (aged 23) Saman Keshavarz has produced an absolute jawdropper of a music video for this Cinnamon Chasers track with one of the coolest titles I’ve heard in some time. Your retinas need a serious rest after zapping through the drug-sex-dance-fun fuelled rollercoaster of a day in this 1st person POV video which shows dazzling and disorientating use of the wide-angle lens. I don’t know how long it took to shoot, but the result is a real audiovisual gem.
With the eyes of every man riveted upon her (aka Rope a Dope) – short film by Laurent Briet
Laurent Briet’s short film for the super smooth Little Minx Exquisite Corpse series (a spin off of Ridley Scott’s RSA Label) has that rare quality of being half music video and half short film, and being very good at both. Set to the heavy beat of Black Strobe’s ‘Shining Bright Star’, your eyes will be just as riveted to the screen as the boxing’s club’s members are on her.
Daughter – short film by Kosai Sekine
Japanese director Kosai Sekine has been a prodigy of the short film circuit ever since his 2005 short Right Place – a witty take on a young man’s OCD – took the best young director’s prize at Cannes in 2006. ‘Daughter’ is no less original or appealing.
We are your friends – music video for Justice vs Simeon by Rozan & Schmelz
No one has yet shown us the price to be paid for deliquent behaviour, but this comes to us now in the form of Rozan and Schmelz’s video for Justice vs Simeon’s 2006 anthem ‘We are your friends’. This is the famous video that provoked Kanye West’s first Awards Show outburst so many moons before Taylor Swift. His claim was that his video was more deserving of the award because it cost millions of dollars. What he didn’t realize is that what makes this clip so ‘monstruously great’ (to quote one of the commenters on the video’s comments board ) – it looks humbly homemade and reminds us all of the most hellish hangovers we’ve ever known.
