mystyle
Do you have a devastating sense of style that would turn Anna Piaggi’s head or inspire John Galliano to seek you out for his next muse? Do you scrutinise the pictures on Face Hunter or The Sartorialist and think “Hmm…she has great style, I’d like to know more about her”?
Mystyle takes the snappers off the streets and puts the camera in your hands.
Job: I am a curator at The Photographers’ Gallery in London and also run the vintage fashion website Frau Braun.
Where did you buy your outfit?
At a vintage fair in Primrose Hill. I love anything from the 1940s and could not leave this beauty of a jacket behind. The sea green colour is amazing together with the heavy appliqué on the front – the whole thing feels very sculptural, nearly architectural. I have several 1940s jackets, which I combine with jeans and simple tops – it makes you look dressed up in an effortless way.
Who or what inspires you?
People. My friends. London. The past. Looking through family photo albums. The Alps. William Morris’s textiles. Anything made out of bakelite. Blondie. Red lipstick. Having a morning swim in Hackney Lido followed by a cup of tea – the best way to contemplate life and make plans.
Where do you shop?
As a long-term collector of vintage clothing I obviously love going to car boot sales, vintage fairs and flea markets. Discovering an amazing piece under mountains of clothing is bliss for me. For everyday pieces I shop in more conventional locations such as Cos and Gap. And then there is the lure of the designer garment… I only ever allow myself to purchase them during sale time and try to buy classic pieces which accompany me for years afterwards, such as a coveted black Victor & Rolf pencil skirt or my beloved oyster coloured Marc Jacobs tap shoes.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
I love music but don’t really keep up with what’s out there so I rely heavily on my friends who know what I like and who put a new selection of itunes together for me every few months.
Dream purchase?
Made already: It’s a little black dress by Martin Grant I got a few years ago in the sales. I once saw Isabella Blow wearing an amazing black dress out of heavy silk and light jersey. I loved the combination of these two clashing fabrics and weights, the casual mixed with the elegant – a uniquely British style that I think Isabella embodied perfectly. I wished that one day I would find a similar dress. I couldn’t believe my luck when I saw the Martin Grant dress with exactly those same qualities hanging on a rail, slipped it on… and it fitted perfectly!
Favourite bar, and why?
At the moment it’s 69 Colebrook Row in Angel. It used to be an Italian sandwich bar but is now a great place to have excellent cocktails. I love it because it’s small, intimate but not pretentious!
Desert island book?
It has to be The Graduate by Charles Webb. I read it when I was a teenager in Germany and it blew me away. This book definitely kick-started my infatuation with all things English and retro. And it also includes a few of my favourite things: it’s simple, it’s sexy and it’s a love story with a good ending!
Where’s the last place you visited?
Munich at Christmas time. I love going there to recharge my batteries and catch up with family and old friends.
Do you think you are cool?
Why not!
Can you run in heels?
I am definitely an All-Stars girl. Such an amazing invention, you can wear them with anything.
