Blogging in Heels: Outi Pyy – OutsaPop Trashion
Outi Pyy is the lady behind OutsaPop Trashion, a fabulous Finnish blog showcasing the best in eye-catching, innovative fashion design. In addition to images of the best catwalks and stylish pieces from around the world, there are also details of tutorials and DIY projects showing you how to recreate runway looks. If you’re having one of those not-sure-what-to-wear days, OutsaPop is guaranteed to inspire you.
We spoke to Outi about collecting vintage hats, projects in the pipeline, which European city she’d love to live in, and of course – whether she can run in heels!
When and why did you start blogging?
I started blogging in May 2007.
What’s your blog about?
OutsaPop Trashion is about DIY fashion. I post about my own projects, tutorials, and about DIY inspiration and sustainable fashion. I try to keep it less “crafty” and more about fashion so that it will inspire fashionable people to start doing their own thing instead of buying new all the time.
Who inspires you?
People who know what they want and make it happen.
What’s your day job?
I work as a sales assistant for an importer in Finland.
What do your family and friends think about your blog?
At first they did not even know what a blog was, but now they are very exited and supportive about all the stuff that I do. Even though I still have to explain my “style ideas” at times.. Nobody had any idea it would grow up to be so big and my mom hopes I could make a living off it someday.
Do you read any other blogs?
Yes.. many of them. I have about 50 different fashion, style and eco blogs in my Bloglovin’.
How do you use Twitter and has it changed how you blog?
Not really. I’m too busy to Tweet.. I tweet my posts sometimes to keep people updated. Facebook groups are more important to me. (See OutsaPop Trashion on Facebook here.)
What couldn’t you live without?
My laptop. It has an inpiration photos folder that contains about 30,000 photos. It is my source for all creation.
How do you stay motivated?
Coffee and cigarettes.
Typical blog wardrobe?
When I’m writing at home, it’s a cardi, sweatpants and wool socks. But I love to dress up for going out. I have a collection of vintage hats that are usually accompanied with heels, a pencil skirt and a second hand top.
Blog soundtrack?
Dragonette, Miami Horror, Daft Punk, Goldfrapp and Ladyhawke.
Favourite European city and why?
Berlin. I adore the artistic and bohemic vibe of the east side. I’d love to move there someday.
What do you think is the biggest problem in Finnish society today and what is the most positive thing?
Finns are an inverted society, and we tend to think global issues do not concern us. I’m hoping that my generation and the younger www-generation will change that. On the other hand I love the dark Finnish humor. It’s very sarcastic.
Do you ever get blog block?
Sure. But not often. I actually use my blog to cheer me up on bad days.
Dream purchase?
My own working space in Helsinki. I’d love to set up a Berlin-style shop/cafe/workspace where people could come in a do DIY projects while having a cup of tea.
Desert island blog?
Fuck You Very Much. It is a blog with very little do do with fashion, but I love their sense of humour, image choices and simple writing style. Not a blog for kids though…
Is blogging a viable career?
It could be. But you need to have a genuine personal style, good visual sense, strong opinions and a way with words to make that happen. Tha’s why I still have a day job!
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I´m writing a DIY fashion book now (it will be published spring 2012). I’m hoping that it will get noticed internationally so that I can write more and even consider making it my new full-time job.
Can you run in heels?
Only if something’s burning. I’m not one of those sporty people!
