On Reading and When You’re a Boy
The Photographer’s Gallery is a place for all photo lovers in London. Currently on show are two very different exhibitions which challenge our views of reading and fashion and depict the changing landscape of the past 50 years. On the ground floor is On Reading, an exhibition from André Kertész . On the second floor, When You’re a Boy challenges the idea that the photographers are the stars of fashion shoots by showing a collection of stylist Simon Foxton‘s work.
On Reading is a tale in black and white of our capacity to read everywhere, to be absorbed by words regardless of our surroundings: a busy Manila street or a crowded Cannes beach. The prints are rather small and black and white, which enhances the raw, sur le vif quality of the clichés. Kertész portrays readers of all ages and backgrounds, and it’s quite easy to identify with the ‘Girl with a Doll’ (1962) or the ‘Old men in NYC’ (1960).
When You’re a Boy showcases men fashion styled by Simon Foxton. His name will probably ring a bell if you’re a regular i-D reader or interested in men’s fashion. Through his collaborations with photographers such as Nick Knight, he has shaped and questioned our vision of masculinity and sexuality.
At the centre of the exhibition room are some of his scrapbooks, displaying eclectic imagery, such as a mysterious Mona Lisa lips 20p stamp, a theatre ticket or a Goldsmith College student card. They provide insight into his inspiration, “record his personal taste in art, clothing and, above all, men”.
Both exhibitions run until October 4th.
