Have you always wanted to be a stylist?
No, it’s something I kind of fell into. I always wanted to work in fashion or textiles though. My mother was a model and her love of fashion was passed onto me.
How did you get to where you are today and would you do anything differently?
I just worked hard, and did a lot of styling for free! and along the way I met a lot of great people, who turned out to be great contacts!
Who helped you along the way?
My boyfriend (Wayne Kahn), he’s a really good photographer so I got a lot of help from him.
Who inspires you?
My mother’s wardrobe has given me a lot of inspiration; she has some of the coolest clothes, including this vintage 1980′s red leopard print catsuit. It’s wicked! I’m inspired by a lot of things. My boyfriend and I love all the fashion mags you can get in shops like Borders. They can give you so much inspiration! 125 and Pop are my faves.
Influences?
I have been influenced mainly by designers who work with colour and prints. I love Dolce and Gabanna, Vivienne Westwood, and photographer David Lachappelle’s use of colour really influences me a lot.
What do you think is the biggest problem in British society today and what is the most positive thing?
The biggest problem right now is the economic crisis. It’s affecting everyone, including all the new up and coming designers. There’s less sponsorship now due to lack of funding and this means we’re now seeing less and less fresh talent. I think the most positive thing happening in society is the way people are now being so eco conscious. It’s everywhere you look, and I love it. Even Primark have made fleeces made of out recycled plastic bottles!
Do you feel British or European?
I’m very British. I love red telephone boxes, cream teas, and mostly the British sense of humour (Fawlty Towers rocks!) I lived in France for a year when I was studying for my degree in fashion, I really enjoyed it but the UK is definitely my home. Plus British fashion is wonderful and really diverse.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
I’m really liking Bat for Lashes, the lead singer wears the coolest clothes… jumpsuits and sequins – perfect!
Hottest trend this season?
SS09 has some cool stuff filtering through from the catwalks. Playsuits are key for the summer months. The designer Zimmerman has the cutest printed playsuit, perfect for the beach or sipping a cold beer in the garden with friends.
What couldn’t you live without?
My purse. I have this gold python Anya Hindmarch purse. It’s huge and has so many compartments. It’s beautiful and makes me happy whenever I see it! Oh, and of course my boyfriend, he’s super great!
Dream purchase?
A beautiful character style chocolate box house with the biggest walk in wardobe. I’d make Carrie proud! I’d fill the house with amazing prints of my boyfriends work, and then fill it some more with lots of pretty bags and shiny things!
Favourite movie?
This is difficult! I love Amelie, but I’m also a sucker for the retro 80′s films like Labyrinth and the Karate Kid.
One piece of style advice?
Always accessorise. Bags, bracelets, shoes, and earrings can make or break an outfit.
Favourite European city and why?
Lille in France is pretty cool. They have an old town which is filled with little boutiques, amazing restaurants, and lovely people (the Lilloise are so much friendlier than the Parisiens!) Barcelona is also a lot of fun, and I love all the Gaudi architecture.
Desert island book?
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, this book is captivating. I also loved the Time Travellers Wife.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Still poring over Net-a-Porter looking for my next fashion find! and hopefully working on even bigger and better shoots. I’d still like to be working with the same people though, as a good team can be hard to find!
Can you run in heels?
I’d like to say yes, but I barely give myself the chance! I live in my cardi Uggs, they are just soo comfy, and the best choice when I’m standing all day long on a shoot. I did once have to run in heels in order to catch a train, and I made it on time…
