A Couple of Restaurants in….Manchester

Add a bit of spice to your night at Akbar’s, a superb Indian restaurant located just off Deansgate, opposite the Science and Industry Museum.I say superb because try as I might to be critical, I cannot fault this restaurant. Offering value for money without compromising food quality, Akbar’s is ideal for a group of friends starting their night out or for families looking for something more original than your average chain restaurant.

The funky lighting and luxurious décor give a contemporary feel whilst adding warmth to an already lively atmosphere, setting this Indian apart from its Mancunian rivals. The uncomplicated menu offers a range of curries for the timid and brave alike; from a mild and sweet Pasanda to what I am told is a rather hot but excellent Madras. Vegetarians would not be disappointed with the selection of vegetable curries on offer, and the range of naan breads, served hanging on a tall tower are an attraction themselves. If you enjoy a beer with your curry be warned as draught beer is not on offer, but on the plus side, they do serve Cobra. What makes Akbar’s particularly unique for me is the Chef’s Handi of the Day, an opportunity to taste traditional, home-style Indian food for the more experimental palate.

You can’t book a table and this place is extremely popular, so be prepared for a wait of maybe half an hour at busy spells. There is a bar and comfortable seating area while you wait, so this is not too taxing, and the efficient service means you’ll never be left waiting too long. My friends and I normally struggle to spend more than £15 a head here – this is perhaps one reason that this place positively bustles. For those wanting a more intimate yet just as relaxed an evening, however, I recommend Croma.

cocktailCroma is an Italian restaurant on Clarence Street, just behind the Dolce and Gabanna store on King’s Street. The trendy, cosmopolitan feel to this area is reflected in Croma’s décor and service, yet fortunately not in its prices. Perfect for a business lunch, a break from shopping, or for a romantic meal in the evening, this restaurant has never let me down and caters for all. The food is delicious and need not be unhealthy, as there is a range of salads on the menu which unusually do not leave you pining for dessert. The cocktails here are outstanding – they are generous to say the least with their measures of alcohol, and they taste fabulous too. Some may say that the bright, minimalistic décor is a little cold, but personally I like Croma because there you wouldn’t feel out of place dressed casually or for an evening out; the unpretentious service leaves you feeling in good hands and very welcome. Think ‘Pizza Express’ but with a much more personal feel and a better drinks menu, and you have Croma.
