The Running in Heels “That Moment” Playlist

Posted in Culturelle » Music » by :: February 8, 2010

Yes, Valentine’s is coming up (yawn…) but this playlist is definitely not about “they’re playing our song” (double yawn…) The Running in Heels “That Moment” playlist is all about the songs that made us think about love. The songs we heard when we realised we were falling in love. Or the tracks that just made us think of that chosen one, and still continue to whenever we hear them. Or maybe one song we can’t stop listening to at the moment and makes us think that maybe, just maybe, that person gives us the same funny, fuzzy feeling that the music does.

Whether it’s love past, present or future, this is a collection of special, private tracks that make us believe in love, even if it’s just for a fleeting moment. The playlist is available to listen to on Spotify or watch the videos on Youtube.

Stand By Me

Stand By Me – Ben E. King

This is not a song specific to me at all, and it is always deemed too contrived. But, this soul number is so many a couple’s love song, it seems stupid to leave it out. Amazing vocals, evocative lyrics, a great tune and simply an embodiment of togetherness.

In My Life – The Beatles

Falling in love with someone is about forgetting your past because the future they seem to promise seems so much brighter. This song is about that: still loving and remembering the places and friends which made your life so special, but moving on from them when you fall in love. “These memories lose their meaning when I think of love as something new”. There’s a time in most significant love affairs when you have to leave something behind to be with that someone. And this song describes it beautifully.

Everywhere – Fleetwood Mac

I don’t really like Fleetwood Mac, but I’d had this CD for a while and had listened to virtually everything else in my music collection. I put the album on and just couldn’t stop listening to this track even though it’s ridiculously poppy and not my kind of sound. Everywhere gave me butterflies in the same way you did and made me want to run barefoot in fields and get drunk on pink champagne. And not care about anything but love.

Brighter Than Sunshine – Aqualung

Matt Hales’ uplifting and heartfelt song beautifully articulates how it feels to be in ‘that moment’ as it creeps up on you when least expected. A lyrically powerful track that will always conjure fond memories.

One Day Like This – Elbow

It reminds me of lazy Sunday breakfasts with my hubby. And we played it at our wedding ceremony last year!

Five Years’ Time – Jonah and the Whale

My man put this track on my mp3 player to listen to while he went away travelling and even though he is now back, I always listen to it. It’s a sweet song that oozes togetherness and evokes images of many happy days spent doing silly things like going to the zoo together. Also a lovely easy-listening tune.

In The Aeroplane Over the Sea

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea – Neutral Milk Hotel

It safely makes it onto my iTunes “Top 25 Most Played.” Imaginative and beautiful lyrics. All about enjoying what you have now, but aware that everything can (and usually does) spin out of control eventually.

Crash Into Me – Dave Matthews Band

This song reminds me that the most perfect ‘love’ moments are usually those wholly, unexpected and simple ones. It reminds me one night, snuggling in a boy’s lap and just listening to each other breathe. And this song.

Thunder Road – Bruce Springsteen

Every now and then my man and me like to kick back, get smashed and dance to this little beauty.  It’s the ultimate freedom song about two crazy kids.  “Show a little faith, there’s magic in the night”.  Indeed.

Get You Good – Jon Justice Band

Whilst I may be biased as I know these guys, this is the most perfect song. Everything about the sound is just so sexy, from the saxophone playing to Jon’s amazing voice. An ode to a night in together, this is the ideal background music for when you’re in the moment. Check out the Jon Justice Band online here.

Sex On Fire – Kings of Leon

This track was playing in the background when I shared my first kiss with my now boyfriend. I remember I had been waiting to hear it all night and thought it was amazing timing when the DJ finally put it on!

Duende + The Some Now – Barbarasteele

This is the best, catchiest song my ex-boyfriend ever wrote, and the first song I had to learn when I joined his band as guitar player in 2006 in San Francisco. Shortly after, I became his girlfriend. A few months later, his best friend and bass player killed himself and Barbarasteele was disbanded. And a couple months after that, my visa to the US expired and I had to move back to Europe. We are still in love, but we cannot be together…yet. A very tragic love story! And besides my story behind it, it’s a very good, sexy song. Download it for free on lastfm.

Reptilia from The Strokes' Room on Fire

Reptilia – The Strokes

This song was my realisation that I was in love with a certain person, as we listened to it all the time, when it was played I would miss him. Just fun, naive love

The Way Young Lovers Do – Van Morrison

Meeting my boyfriend seven years ago was a bit of an inconvenience for us both (long story) and not exactly the romantic idealist’s dream. It was an unlikely coupling – still is in ways! – but nonetheless almighty. This is the song my boyfriend has since told me kept playing itself on his inner monologue’s turntable, and subsequently, is the one that always reminds me of the time we got together. Slightly erratic and fierce, this track does something remarkably to one’s spine and spirit.

Last Goodbye – Jeff Buckley

Ironically, ‘that moment’ represented by this tune is something I hope nobody has to endure too many times in one lifetime.  But it’s a gorgeous farewell to love and acknowledges that being together will always be a fond memory.

In These Arms – The Swell Season

My boyfriend Finn knows how crazy I am about John Carney’s film ‘Once’ – especially the soundtrack, sung by Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova. One night I wasn’t allowed to know where we were going. Hard for me as I am a control freak! We drunk Cava and ate sandwiches in the park, huddled in big coats, and then he pointed at the lights shining through the trees in front of us – he had got tickets for us to see the Swell Season. When this song came on I realised I was in love with him. It is romantic without being saccharine. Glen & Marketa have an on/off relationship and watching them sing to each other is amazing. I’m hooked on it.

Je L’Aime A Mourir / La Fille Qui M’Accompagne – Francis Cabrel

I can’t choose between them, but Cabrel’s lyrical genius is highlighted in these two achingly beautiful odes to love. I have tried to translate both songs for friends but the English versions do not quite do justice to his description of how it feels to be unashamedly and unconditionally in love with someone.

Edith Piaf

La Vie en Rose – Edith Piaf

“Quand il me prend dans ses bras/ Il me parle tout bas/ Je vois la vie en rose”; the loveliest, most perfect lyrics. This song just epitomises being in love.
Chosen by Bobbie

Everything – Michael Bublé

My boyfriend used to play this when we first got to together and sing little bits of it to me, so it always makes me smile when I hear it now. A little cheesy, but there you go!

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow – Amy Winehouse

I remember her performing this cover of the Shirelles classic on ‘Tonight with Jools Holland’ when she was just a wee 17 year old.  This slowed down version reminds me of those early electric, magical yet unsure days of a relationship, where you are standing at the precipice of falling in love with someone.  The moment is pregnant with the potential of something wonderful to come and yet the vulnerability that comes with laying your feelings on the line.  Has a heart wrenching edge that gets me every time.

Chosen by Bassma

Neptune’s Jewels – Mystic

Just listen to it. It’s a love letter to a guy who is in a different world than the rest. And a girl who can see his light outside of the boxes. And the silent back and forth, the pledge that her love will be there because he’s “the one”.
