Tripping Out in the Tropics
This month’s cover story was shot by Stephanie Ross. We found out a bit more about the people involved with the shoot…
Stephanie Ross – Photographer and Stylist
Stephanie graduated last year with a degree in fashion photography from Southampton Solent University. Five years from now, she hopes to be happily snapping away in a big city, hopefully with the Canon 5D mark II. Inspired by gypsies, tramps and thieves, Stephanie occasionally ventures out onto the high street to hit the charity shops for some fashionable foraging. She couldn’t live without her friends and considers that the biggest problem in society at the moment is fake tan. When it comes to culture, Stephanie’s currently listening to Those Dancing Days and is a big fan of two great classics of the silver screen: Anchorman and City of God. Although she can’t run in heels, Stephanie can play the recorder. See more of Stephanie’s work on Flickr or Myspace.
Gemma Laverick – Make-up Artist
Gemma has recently become interested in experimental and creative make-up looks, using colour. She feels that in make-up there are no real rules, anything goes! In five years time she hopes to be succeeding in the make-up industry, perhaps working in London doing editorial make-up for magazines. Gemma is also attracted by catwalk make-up because of the creativity and experimentation involved. She thinks that the biggest problem in society at the moment is people being too materialistic and self centred, and that if we all thought more about helping others rather than ourselves, the world would be a much happier place. Gemma can definitely run in heels, usually when it’s a cold, wet night and she’s about to miss the last taxi!
Emily Anderson – Model
Aspiring young photographer and sometime model Emily is currently studying for her A-levels and will undertake an internship with John Wright this summer. In five years, she’d love to be living in London and finishing my time assisting a photographer ready to start taking on her own clients. Emily is very inspired by Greek culture, as she feels that they make sure life is rich and value really important. She also find inspiration in London’s kookiness and in the words of Mark Twain. Emily is concerned by the current employment situation and the difficulty that presents young graduates in finding work. Although Emily can run in heels, she is yet to master the art of doing this gracefully. You can see more of Emily’s photographic work online here, and peruse her thoughts on her blog.
Gary Lam – Hairstylist
Gary’s creative flare is manifested in his fascination for the art of hairdressing. He would practice religiously whilst growing up in Hong Kong where he carved out a reputation for himself. He strengthened his portfolio on moving to the UK undertaking an apprenticeship and has worked with Cosmopolitan and Harper’s Bazaar.
