Here’s one starlet I have a particularly fond spot for as the wonderful Emily Blunt actually went to school with me, albeit a few years below! Thanks to the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada, Emily shot to fame and she hasn’t looked back. She has played an array of characters from the bitchy assistant working at Runway to the strong willed Queen Victoria and is able to change her appearance easily to suit each part.

Emily is an elegant woman who can look classic with barely any make up ,or edgy with thick black liner and nude lips. In this photograph Emily has used nudes and neutrals to create a subtle but beautifully groomed look.

How to Get the Look

Next Season’s Nails

After a bright summer season of candy-coloured nail shades, autumnal nail trends are taking on a distinctly darker tone. Following the A/W collection palette of sludgy greys and mossy greens, the new nail colours are fresh, modern and simple. This is the season of the grown up, elegance and simplicity are the buzzwords and nail colours are following suit.

The It-Colour

The mighty Chanel has done it again this autumn with the must-have colour of the season. Following on from the incredible success of Particuliere, Global Creative Director Peter Phillips has created a stunning new colour in the form of Paradoxal, a grey-violet shade that will have beauty junkies salivating. Get in early though girls, as this is sure to sell out fast, after all who can resist that iconic bottle?

If you miss out on the Chanel polish, there are alternatives: OPI’s Purple with a Purpose is a gorgeous berry coloured shade with a hint of smoky grey, reminiscent of blackberry crumble mixed with the ashes of bonfires. Rimmel’s 60 Second polishes are a dream for colour in a rush and the Delicious Dark purple shade will keep your nails bang on trend without breaking the bank.

Soft Winter Shades

Nude colours are a perennial classic and strike the perfect note this season, complementing the soft greys and camels that paraded the runways. As always Essie has come up trumps with three beautiful new muted shades; Demure Vixen, Playa del Platinum and Miss Matched. These soft colours are understated, elegant and really rather fabulous. OPI’s Sweet Heart is another classic shade that will never go out of style.

Green is one of the hottest nail colours for this autumn with many brands bringing out stunning new shades, from apple to moss. OPI’s Cuckoo for this Colour has possibly the best name ever and the tone doesn’t disappoint. A dark jade colour, this nail polish will make you swoon with delight. Essie’s Pretty Edgy is the shade of the ripest Granny Smith apple and promises to brighten up the dark, cold nights of winter, whilst Turquoise and Caicos is a softer shade for the less brave. Rimmel’s 60 Second Colour Green with Envy is a cheaper alternative, as is the brand’s I Love Lasting Finish in Green Grass.

The On-Trend Topcoat

Despite this array of gorgeous colours, the essential nail product for this season is none other than a humble topcoat. But this is no ordinary topcoat, this is the new matte finish polish that turns the varnish underneath smooth and non-shiny. Matte was the finish of the season and simply by purchasing one of these babies you’ll be able to update any nail polishes you already own. There is a variety of products to choose from as so many brands have now produced one. Most brands are currently offering this product (we especially like Nubar’s Nail V For Men version) and it’s a great way of flirting with the look without the full on commitment of buying a coloured polish with a matte finish. Make sure your nails don’t get left behind this season!

What’s blue, green, pink, purple and yellow? Your new summer make-up palette. Ladies, unleash your inner magpie; 2010 is the summer of jewel-coloured eyes.

Catwalks around the world have seen an explosion of colour this season, with label giants such as Viktor and Rolf, DKNY and Versace undergoing the technicolour treatment. The ultra-sweet candy hues that have been brightening up the fashion world seemingly echo the fresher, more fun take on style that we’re seeing this summer.

One of the best things about this look is that it is so versatile, it suits everyone. A sort of ‘one-size-fits-all’ for your make-up bag. When creating the look yourself, bear in mind the colour of your eyes, and choose colours that contrast to really make a statement.

Blue eyed girls should go for warm coppers and reds, like this Barry M Dazzle Dust in Cherry Red, while the green-eyed among us should stick to a palette of purples and blues. Bourjois Eyeshadow in Absolute Violet epitomises evening glamour, and would make any green eyes pop. Accentuate brown eyes with a deep forest shade – one of our favourites is MAC’s Humid. For something more unusual, why not try out some yellow eyeshadow? Chrome Yellow by MAC will create a fashion forward look that’s bang on trend.

To make sure that your colour stays on, look for eyeshadows can be used wet or dry, so you can control the intensity of the colour and slip effortlessly between day and night time glamour. For a dramatic evening look, use a wet brush to paint a bold line of colour along the crease of your eye.

Using different hues of the same colour give your eyes depth and ensures a more sophisticated look. Be sure to apply the lightest shade to the inner corners, as this gives the illusion of big eyes. If you’re looking for something a little pricier, try NARS Duo Eyeshadows – we love the bright, tropical tones of Rated R; a shimmery combination of chartreuse and cobalt that will really make a statement.

Nailing The Trends

From molten Minx metallics and the prettiest of pastels to steely studs and ravishing rivets, flesh-toned nudes, oh and did I mention that Chanel polish? When it comes to trends this season, we have them totally nailed.

Stormy shades from OPI, Essie and Models Own

Stormy Weather

Current weather conditions, though leaving us more than a little down in the dumps, are at least bang on trend colour-wise for this season. Those cumulonimbus clouds have rocked everything from graphite to ash and dove grey to mink in the past few weeks – it seems where Chanel (or in this case artistic director of make up – Peter Philips) leads even the weather follows. This season, Particulière, the must-have mauvy-mink nail shade from Chanel has caused as much of a stir as last season’s Jade, prompting beauty counter waiting lists and numerous copy-cat colour-ways.

Less gloomy than the inky blacks and blues of winter and more flattering on emerging-from-the-cold-and-dark skin tones than some of the lighter, brighter nail colours, grey is proving to be the perfect transitional tone. If waiting lists and price tags of £16/€18 upwards are not your thing, there are some varnishes that come surprisingly close; OPI’s You Don’t Know Jacques, Essie’s greige offering Chinchilly and Models Own’s Purple Grey.

Candy Cravings

Whilst sugar-cravings should have been thoroughly sated following Easter’s indulgences, keep your sweet-tooth at bay and your waistline intact all season with these super sweet candy-coloured pastels. Illamasqua’s pre-summer shades are just as enticing as their names suggest; Blow, a fabulous lemon sorbet – super flattering against darker or tanned skin tones. Wink, an on-trend lilac – the perfect alternative to girly pinks, the milky mint-toned, Nudge and Caress, a wonderfully opaque greyish-blue.

Though Illamasqua appear to have all bases, and shades, covered with these offerings the beauty industry are definitely leaving us spoilt for choice this season when it comes to Miami Beach-inspired pastel palettes. Think cool aquas, hot corals, icy blues, marshmallow pinks and lemon sorbets all in milky, opaque textures. For darker skin tones, MAC’s Coconut Ice is simply stunning whilst Revlon’s Lilac Pastelle or Marks & Spencer’s Mint polish pop against paler skins. OPI’s Panda Monium Pink looks effortless and very now, working against all skin shades.

The New Nudes

If pretty pastels and sorbet shades are proving a little too sickly sweet but you still crave that fresh, spring look, then the trend for Mannequin hands – as seen at Louis Vuitton where nail shades were meticulously matched for each model by nail artist Sophy Robson – might prove to be the perfect alternative.Though the look is somewhat troublesome to create – the wrong nail shade can leave your hands looking a little corpse-like – the perfect foundation-like shade will elongate your hands, looking modern and groomed.

As with all make-up bases, when matching up skin tones a bit of trial and error is required but the following shades proved very popular on the Spring/Summer runways. CND’s Putty, OPI’s Samoan Sand and Essie’s Mucho Dinero. To achieve a true plastic, mannequin-esque hand, a coat of Essie’s Matte About You gives a matte, shine-free, modern finish.

Creative Nails

Looking for something a little more high-impact? Minx’s high-shine, high-definition, molten metallic nail transfers will not disappoint. Available in a number of finishes and patterns from plaid to polka dots, stripes to animal skins, these are not for the faint-hearted. That said, the simple gold, platinum or bronze transfers look simply stunning against tanned feet, and lasting up to four weeks, make the standard pre-holiday French pedicure look like a very dull option in comparison. If you are feeling particularly creative, Minx are also able to replicate your own pattern or design onto custom-made transfers.

Beauty for this season is all about going girly and revisiting the pastel shades you might have favoured in your teenage days. Ice cream colours were used on eyes on the catwalks but given a modern twist with the addition of matte lipsticks or tinted lipbalm. Soft pastel shades are the must-have for nails for Spring/Summer 2010 and lots of brands have brought out seasonal collections with a choice of pale, pretty colours. Essential to the youthful look is a healthy, glowing complexion and for a finishing flourish of girly styling, bunches and braids are de rigueur!
