Dior's chic Garden Party nail colours

‘After women, flowers are the most lovely things God has given to the world.’

These are not the only words Christian Dior spoke on his appreciation of flowers; his love of the botanical, stemmed throughout his life and career. His first collection, unveiled in 1947 and referred to as the New Look, due to its influence on the fashion world at the time, was called Corolle – or corolla, which roughly translates to way petals fan out from the flower’s stigma.

The famous collection was inspired by the plants growing in the gardens of his family home, Villa les Rhumbs. Perched overlooking the sea in the French coastal town of Granville, it’s now a museum, boasting among the archive of his past haute couture collections, a beautiful rose garden Dior planted as a young man.

The new Dior Garden Party nail polish collection is inspired by his roses and the gatherings he hosted among the gardens; ’Grand Balls of the Century’, he called them. The scent of rose emanates from each lacquer, most detectable after the nails are completely dry and the varnish fumes gone; which is likely the healthier time to sniff them too.

The two Dior Vernis nail shades, created by Director of Dior Make-up Tyen, are punchy and universally wearable, providing a pop of spring, whilst in reality we’re still in the ghastly grips of winter. Waterlily, an iridescent, minty green, is my favourite of the two, and the one that drew the most spontaneous compliments from friends and colleagues. Forget-me-not, a pretty mauve hue, is the more grown-up of the two, and pleasingly flattering even on my pale winter skin. Both, with the added preservation of a clear base and top coat, remained chip free for a week; only shifting then because I was ready for a colour change.

Halloween is the one time of the year when you can definitely try out something a little different when it comes to makeup. These are this season’s winners when it comes to lipgloss

The Power Pony

Autumn/Winter’s most foolproof trend? You can’t really get much easier than the simple yet sophisticated ponytail! If there’s one look you absolutely must nail this season, this is it. Go high and haute à la Louis Vuitton, sleek and strict as seen at Mary Katrantzou or prettily-accented with a hairband as shown at Valentino; whether you’re wearing day or night, there’s a pony to suit. The key to the look? The New Natural

Yes, we thought that the ponytail had to be the most fuss-free trend for Autumn/Winter. Well, we lied. Easier still is this season’s no-makeup look – do not adjust your set. Yes, cosmetics were pretty much banned from the catwalks of designers including Burberry, Proenza Schouler and Prada. Of course, totally natural isn’t entirely true either; what’s actually required is a subtle hint of makeup for flawless features. Define eyebrows with Becca’s Brow Powder, and accentuate cheekbones and a glowing complexion with Topshop’s Bronzer and Blusher duo. Nourish and moisturise lips with Dr Lipp’s Original Nipple Balm, for a super soft natural pout.

Sixties Sex Kitten

In contrast to the fashion-forward ponytail, elsewhere designers created glamorous, sexy looks with a serious nod to 1960′s styling; Jean Paul Gaultier’s models sported towering bouffant beehive wigs, while the Bottega Veneta girls wore sophisticated French twists. At Nina Ricci, the look was a little more girlish, with hair teased into voluminous styles typical of Sixties siren Brigitte Bardot. John Frieda’s Luxurious Volume range is the best place to start if you’re looking to create the XXL body needed for a retro updo – especially the brand’s Blow-Dry Lotion which helps lift hair at the roots while you dry. The Red Lip

Scarlet lips are a perennial beauty classic, and the easiest way to change things up for this season is to take things a shade darker – leave true red behind and opt for deep berry and wine shades. To give lips a modern, on-trend finish, choose a lipstain or matte colour which looks more relaxed and less ‘done’. Models at Missoni wore a dark bordeaux tone applied with a light hand, and at Gucci lips were deep and berry-coloured. Can’t handle the dramatic shades? Diane von Furstenberg showed the perfect red for daytime, best worn with a subtle smoky eye. Try Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Embrace by Hourglass – if you dare, or go for Lord & Berry’s Vogue Matte Velvet Lipstick in Cupid Berry. With a lightweight formula, Stila’s Crush Lip & Cheek Stain is a more non-committal way of wearing a darker colour.

Nail the colour trends for this season...

In these cash-strapped times, it can be hard to keep up with the latest trends without risking irate calls from the bank manager.  So it’s good to see that one of the key ways to keep on trend is right at your fingertips. Literally. Getting your nail colour right is the key to finishing off any outfit; magazine shoots are quick to quote the nail colour and the nail artist on any fashion shoot, while nail colours and treatments on the catwalk draw many column inches. So what should you be wearing this season?

OPI’s Touring America collection takes you on a rollercoaster ride across the great country, with glorious names for each colour, such as Uh-Oh Roll Down the Window, My Address is “Hollywood” and Color to Diner For.  For the deepest darkest nails as seen on the catwalk, go for Get In The Expresso Lane, a rich glossy dark coffee colour.

Essie, the other giant in the world of nails, has gone for ladylike prim-and-proper old-time glamour, with shades inspired by arm-candy ‘it’ bags.  Tap into the nude trend with Ladylike, an opaque demure light pink shade that will add a highly polished Park Avenue gloss to any manicure.

For something a little edgier, Illamasqua’s Faux Pas is a blue-violet shade from the current Theatre of the Nameless collection. The deep rich colour is intensified with the new waxy “rubber-look” finish that will have everyone jealous.  And as ever, Illamasqua’s nail varnishes apply beautifully.

Leighton Denny’s latest offering takes you into another world, with names such as Meteor Match (a simmering pale marine colour) and Your Planet Or Mine, a turquoise-marine shade with an unusual oil-on-water effect that dries to a mirror-like shine.  Tap into the metallic and monochrome trends seen on the catwalk and high street with Leighton Denny’s Purely Plutonic, from the Atmospheric Collection.  A cool gunmetal silver, this sophisticated shade is a go-with-anything edgy neutral.

Take the metallic trend one step further with LCN’s fabulous magnetic nail varnishes for DIY futuristic nail art.  Choose one of the eight shades of the specially formulated varnish, and after applying a thick coat, hold one of the magnets over the surface of the polish for about ten seconds and watch it create the design as the polish is pushed away by the magnet to mirror the pattern.

Every season, Chanel is the absolute last word in nail colours, ever since the meteoric fame of Rouge Noir, and this season’s offering is no exception.  Opt for Peridot, a glistening, shimmering hypnotic greenish-gold that changes hues with every turn of the fingers. Application of shimmers can sometimes be a little tricky, but Chanel has perfected the formula for perfect application and colour-payoff, even with just one coat.  Instantly recognisable as THE shade of the season, you will be talk of nail town with this one.

Body Bronze 101

First off, if you have to sit in the sun, safe tanning is the ultimate concern. Forget the chignon or the ballerina bun, the updo is worn with a twist for Spring/Summer 2011; in London, Jonathan Saunders added interest with a miniature side-swept quiff, whilst in Paris, models at Yves Saint Laurent wore hair twisted at both sides for a sleek style with a touch of severity. At Oscar de la Renta, the big, 1960′s style bun was revamped for 2011 with a slicked down centre parting and at Versace, a black, wet-look adornment was added. Gucci‘s glamorous garments took centre stage in Milan, worn with a twisted variation on the simple ponytail.

Bright Eyes

Colour is, as the saying goes, having a moment. It’s definitely time to ban black, as this season bright shades from vibrant orange and intense blue to fluorescent neon tones took the catwalk by storm. And there’s no need to limit experimenting with colour to your wardrobe; there’s a whole palette of eyeshadow shades to choose from too! Go for cool greens and blues, as seen at Mary Katrantzou, Michael van der Ham and Oscar de la Renta; they’re the ‘safe’ options when it comes to bright shadows.  On the other hand, you’ll really make an impact with a sherbet yellow shade and they’re surprisingly flattering too, banishing dark circles and ‘waking up’ the eye area in an instant. Don’t forget a slick of mascara to finish the look and add polish. Choose a sunflower tone, as seen at Louise Gray or a green-yellow, shown here at Christian Dior, and experiment to see what works best with your complexion.

A Pop of Colour

The simplest way to join this season’s bright colour gang has to be choosing a bold lipcolour.If you’re feeling even more imaginative and adventurous, we suggest doubling up, and sporting bright lipstick AND colourful clothes or eyecolour. You certainly won’t go unnoticed, and you definitely will look you know your fashion stuff. This spring, back away from traditional postbox red and choose something a little different. How about a hot pink, as seen at Jil Sander and Diane von Furstenberg? Or maybe an orange or coral tone, a la Fendi and Marni? If you really must wear scarlet, try smudging on with your fingers or experimenting with a lipstain for a more matte, modern look.

Vampy, gothic beauty brings drama...

Whether you call it the Twilight effect or the return of the vamp, there’s no denying that gothic chic is back for autumn. And with a raft of vampire-inspired TV shows on the small screen, there’s no shortage of inspiration. On the red carpet too, the look is proving popular, with Megan Fox, Dita von Teese, and Peaches Geldof all working the dark lips and smoky eyes combo.

Done well, the goth look can be beautiful. Done wrong, however, and you’re in Marylin Manson impersonator territory. So how do you get it right? We asked Twilight head make-up artist and gothic beauty expert Jeanne van Phue to show us how it’s done.

The woman responsible for making sure the Twilight vamps look flawless – regardless of late nights – Jeanne says that good skincare is the route to perfect, pale vampire skin. “The key to creating any make-up look is taking care of your skin,” she advises. “Don’t go to sleep with your make-up on, cleanse your skin thoroughly, use a toner and apply moisturiser before bed. Applying a foundation on flaky skin is unattractive and a patchy complexion doesn’t look vampy – it just looks awful.”

Use concealer to cover blemishes and dark circles and follow with a little foundation to ensure your skin looks pristine. Try Revlon Colorstay Mineral Mousse Foundation for a natural look. “In creating the vampire look I was asked to keep them pale,” adds Jeanne. “I also used eye shadow on Rob Pattinson and lip colour, otherwise he would have looked very washed out. I also allowed some natural colour to come through the make-up on his cheeks. I used SKII Air Touch OP1 foundation and added highlighter on his brow and cheek bones to give him a more luminous look.”

“You have to bear in mind that there’s a fine line between glamorous and frightening, especially when it comes to eye make-up,” comments MAC make-up artist Vimi Joshi. “Don’t make your smoky eye too messy and remember to use a little blush – that’s what will stop you looking like a real vampire or teenage goth.” “Whether using powder or cream shadows on your eyes, you need to first apply a primer,” advises Jeanne. “This will keep the application of your shadow on longer and prevent the shadow from creasing.

Apply ivory or bisque powder shadow such as Estee Lauder Pure Color Eyeshadow in Vanilla, as a base for the entire eyelid. In the crease lightly apply a natural light brown shadow and blend up to the brow bone. Next, apply black liquid eyeliner – try FACE Stockholm ink Precision Liner – over the shadow, and draw a thin line across the eye, winging it out as you get to the outer corner. Paint a thin line on to the bottom lid, also close to the lash line before going over it with a dark brown or black eyeshadow. For added drama, line the inner rim of your eye with a soft textured black kohl pencil before coating lashes with black mascara such as MAC Zoom Fast Black Lash mascara in Deepest Black.” Up the glamour stakes with a couple of false lashes or go all out with a full set. Girls With Attitude do a huge range of false eyelashes, including the ultra glamorous Vamp.

“I used lipstick on all of our vampires, including Rob, Kellan and Jackson,” says Jeanne, “and it’s essential for this look or you run the risk of looking washed out. I used Benefit Silky Finish Lipstick in Ms. Behavin’,  mixed with lip balm, on them but for a really vampy look; try a dark red.” Miners Lipstick in Vixen is ideal. Begin by lining lips with a pencil matching your chosen colour. “Apply your lipstick top and bottom,” says Jeanne, “then add a lighter colour in the centre of the lower lip .This will create the illusion of fuller lips.” Finally, add a little blush but as Jeanne emphasises, you need to keep it pale. “I didn’t use blush on the Twilight vampires,” she says, “because they had to look pale and bloodless. If you’re going to use it, make it a pale pink or peach on the apple of your cheek and blend out and up into the temple.” Try MAC Powder Blush in Pinch O’ Peach. Make sure you use it sparingly though; the contrast between the pale skin and darker blush can make you look a bit clownish if you’re not careful.
