Dior's chic Garden Party nail colours

‘After women, flowers are the most lovely things God has given to the world.’

These are not the only words Christian Dior spoke on his appreciation of flowers; his love of the botanical, stemmed throughout his life and career. His first collection, unveiled in 1947 and referred to as the New Look, due to its influence on the fashion world at the time, was called Corolle – or corolla, which roughly translates to way petals fan out from the flower’s stigma.

The famous collection was inspired by the plants growing in the gardens of his family home, Villa les Rhumbs. Perched overlooking the sea in the French coastal town of Granville, it’s now a museum, boasting among the archive of his past haute couture collections, a beautiful rose garden Dior planted as a young man.

The new Dior Garden Party nail polish collection is inspired by his roses and the gatherings he hosted among the gardens; ’Grand Balls of the Century’, he called them. The scent of rose emanates from each lacquer, most detectable after the nails are completely dry and the varnish fumes gone; which is likely the healthier time to sniff them too.

The two Dior Vernis nail shades, created by Director of Dior Make-up Tyen, are punchy and universally wearable, providing a pop of spring, whilst in reality we’re still in the ghastly grips of winter. Waterlily, an iridescent, minty green, is my favourite of the two, and the one that drew the most spontaneous compliments from friends and colleagues. Forget-me-not, a pretty mauve hue, is the more grown-up of the two, and pleasingly flattering even on my pale winter skin. Both, with the added preservation of a clear base and top coat, remained chip free for a week; only shifting then because I was ready for a colour change.

The limited edition duo launch this month, and much like other coveted designer nail colours out there, are likely to be snapped up

Dior Vernis: £18 each. Available to buy online here from 16th January.

Looking for something a little different to add to your Halloween costume this year? Eye Rock's Swarovski crystal adornments are more glimmer and glamorous than ghoulish!

Eye Rock's sparkling and sophisticated Swarovski-encrusted adornments are on offer in shades including Topaz, Azure and Jet Black

Halloween is the one time of the year when you can definitely try out something a little different when it comes to makeup. You can expect to see all manner of vampires, witches and ghouls taking public transport over the next few days, so sporting a slick of black lipstick will probably look understated rather than OTT.

False eyelashes and nails are no longer out of the ordinary, but we think you’ll agree that Eye Rock’s sparkling crystals are quite special, and will add a hint of sophistication to any disguise – if it’s possible to pull off sophisticated zombie! There are six designs available in a variety of colours and shapes, all made with Swarovski Elements crystals. They’re suprisingly easy to apply – simply place on clean skin and hold for ten seconds to ensure that the sparkle adheres. Et voila! Best worn with black lippy and lashings of fake blood…

Eye Rock are available to buy online here.

Glosses can lift the face, accentuate a smile like a lipstick never could and boost your favourite lippie; here’s a look at this season’s winners...

Die-hard fashionistas may well be sporting lipstick and wouldn’t be seen dead in lip gloss this season, but attempt to separate 95% of women from their glosses and you’d be a very brave person to try. Glosses can lift the face, accentuate a smile like a lipstick never could and best of all, they can bring out the best in your favourite lippie. Here’s a look at this season’s winners…

These are this season’s winners when it comes to lipgloss

Highly pigmented glosses are perfect for those who need the colour hit of a lipstick, but want the sheen and shine of a gloss. The new Tom Ford make-up range has a fabulous range of shades in the Ultra Shine Lip Gloss collection. Lost Cherry is a deep, glorious saturated red gloss that stays on for hours, has a high shine and is smooth and creamy to wear. Even just a quick swipe of this gloss ensures a bold and glamorous look, although it looks just as good worn over a lipstick.

Tom Ford’s gloss will bring out the vixen in you, but go for Chantecaille’s Brilliant Gloss in the Love shae when you feel the need to your angelic side. It’s an innocently sexy pink that glistens on the lips, while the slight plumping action from vegetal-polysaccarides (sugars) will have you well on the way to a come-hither pout in no time. Enriched with Green Tea to protect and soothe and boasting a super-soft brush to ensure smooth application, this is a must-have shade and formulation.

Chanel is the current darling of the season with the fabulous windows and pop-up stores all over Harrods. If a classic tweed jacket is slightly out of your reach, then a lipgloss from their iconic make-up range might just fit the bill. Lèvres Scintillantes (Glossimer For Lips)i n Braise is a pinkish-bronze that will make the most of any lingering summer tan. The sparkle is just right for the season, and the colour is perfect to wear both day and night. It can also be used over your favourite lipstick (from the same colour family) to go from a day to night look in seconds.

The Colour Quench Lip Balm from Clarins comes in a delicious array of shades, all of which give a shimmering transparent layer of colour to the lips with a delicate cherry scent and flavour. The finish is glossy, not sticky, thanks to the 100% natural high-shine polymer and cocktail of skin treatment plant extracts that intensively nourish, repair, protect and moisturise, all the while dressing the lips in a smoothing glaze of colour and shine. Opt for the Fig shade, a brownish-pink that will see you through the Autumn and Winter seasons in style.

Stay on trend for the coming season and tap into the luxurious rich colours of the Seventies with the iconic Dual Ended Almost Lipstick and Long Last Glosswear SPF15 in Black Honey. This clever little two-for-one package from Clinique houses both the lipstick and the matching gloss, and while they look good and vampy worn together, don’t be afraid to wear the gloss either on its own or with another lipstick of your choice. The sheer high shine formulation makes it much more wearable than it may seem in the tube and its ultra-moisturising properties ensure your lips feel comfortable (and SPF protected) all day.

Beauty trends for this season are flattering, fun and fairly simple, meaning that even if you're not a pro makeup artist, you can still try them out. Here's our pick of the looks to wear for Autumn/Winter 2011.

While you may have been poring over this season’s fashion trends and coveting glamorous Forties pieces as seen at Louis Vuitton, there’s lots to get excited about when it comes to beauty trends for Autumn/Winter ’11 too. And why? Well firstly, the chance to overhaul the old makeup bag and invest in some new beauty treats is never a bad thing. However, the second reason for excitement is quite simply that this time around beauty trends are sexier, easier and much more wearable. No need to bleach your brows, sport black lipstick or pass on the mascara – unless you want to, of course! Beauty trends for this season are flattering , fun and fairly simple, meaning that even if you’re not a pro makeup artist, you can have a go.

Back to Black

This season, mascara and eyeliner are back with a vengeance and they’re blacker, sexier and bring a definite feeling of decadence to beauty for Autumn/Winter 2011. This season it’s all about eyes, whether you go for lashings of mascara as seen at Gucci, a stark swipe of liner (worn at Stella McCartney), or a graphic, sixties-inspired pencil smudge – rocked by models at Anna Sui. Applying liquid liner is an absolute cinch with the Liner Feutre from Bourjois; this clever felt tip means that even if you’re not deft of hand, you can achieve a chic look. In blackest black, the brand’s Volume Glamour Max mascara is another makeup bag must-have, giving your lashes a serious boost that really lasts. For pencil perfection, choose Topshop’s soft kohl liner in Crushed Charcoal, which comes in a very handy set with a super flattering lipliner shade.

Maximum mascara as seen at Gucci, a swipe of liner (worn at Stella McCartney), or a pencil smudge - rocked by models at Anna Sui

The Power Pony

Autumn/Winter’s most foolproof trend? You can’t really get much easier than the simple yet sophisticated ponytail! If there’s one look you absolutely must nail this season, this is it. Go high and haute à la Louis Vuitton, sleek and strict as seen at Mary Katrantzou or prettily-accented with a hairband as shown at Valentino; whether you’re wearing day or night, there’s a pony to suit. The key to the look? Beautifully blow-dried hair is essential to this hairstyle, and John Frieda’s Salon Shine ionic hairdryer is a super speedy professional-quality dryer that smoothes and ensures that hair stays shiny and frizz-free. Don’t overload hair with products as this will weigh hair down; go for a final light spritz of shine spray, such as Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Sheer Shine Mist, or add a little texture with Hairplay Dry Wax from KMS California. For mega-watt shine, Fekkai’s whole Glossing range is a must-have. Pow!

For this season's must have hairstyle, the power ponytail, look to designers Louis Vuitton, Mary Katrantzou and Valentino

The New Natural

Yes, we thought that the ponytail had to be the most fuss-free trend for Autumn/Winter. Well, we lied. Easier still is this season’s no-makeup look – do not adjust your set. Yes, cosmetics were pretty much banned from the catwalks of designers including Burberry, Proenza Schouler and Prada. Of course, totally natural isn’t entirely true either; what’s actually required is a subtle hint of makeup for flawless features. Define eyebrows with Becca’s Brow Powder, and accentuate cheekbones and a glowing complexion with Topshop’s Bronzer and Blusher duo. Nourish and moisturise lips with Dr Lipp’s Original Nipple Balm, for a super soft natural pout.

(Almost) no-fuss style: models went au naturel on the catwalks of Burberry, Proenza Schouler and Prada this season...

Sixties Sex Kitten

In contrast to the fashion-forward ponytail, elsewhere designers created glamorous, sexy looks with a serious nod to 1960′s styling; Jean Paul Gaultier’s models sported towering bouffant beehive wigs, while the Bottega Veneta girls wore sophisticated French twists. At Nina Ricci, the look was a little more girlish, with hair teased into voluminous styles typical of Sixties siren Brigitte Bardot. John Frieda’s Luxurious Volume range is the best place to start if you’re looking to create the XXL body needed for a retro updo – especially the brand’s Blow-Dry Lotion which helps lift hair at the roots while you dry. We suggest using a brush like the Shu Uemura Art of Hair Art of Tools Large Round Brush, to create maximum volume. Styling hair into a beehive is actually a lot easier than you might think, so if you’re not sure, try looking at tutorials on Youtube – this video from Wonder How To is one of the best. Updo in place, finish the look with a little 1960′s lippy; Bourjois’ Sweet Kiss Lipstick in Rose Cachemire is a delicate pink shade perfect for everyday wear.

Glamorous, sophisticated and oh-so-sexy: hairstyles at Bottega Veneta, Nina Ricci and Jean Paul Gaultier oozed Sixties style

The Red Lip

Scarlet lips are a perennial beauty classic, and the easiest way to change things up for this season is to take things a shade darker – leave true red behind and opt for deep berry and wine shades. To give lips a modern, on-trend finish, choose a lipstain or matte colour which looks more relaxed and less ‘done’. Models at Missoni wore a dark bordeaux tone applied with a light hand, and at Gucci lips were deep and berry-coloured. Can’t handle the dramatic shades? Diane von Furstenberg showed the perfect red for daytime, best worn with a subtle smoky eye. Try Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Embrace by Hourglass – if you dare, or go for Lord & Berry’s Vogue Matte Velvet Lipstick in Cupid Berry. With a lightweight formula, Stila’s Crush Lip & Cheek Stain is a more non-committal way of wearing a darker colour.

Choose a dark, dramatic lip with a twist this season; as worn by models at Missoni, Gucci and Diane von Furstenberg

Nail the colour trends for this season...

In these cash-strapped times, it can be hard to keep up with the latest trends without risking irate calls from the bank manager. So it’s good to see that one of the key ways to keep on trend is right at your fingertips. Literally. Getting your nail colour right is the key to finishing off any outfit; magazine shoots are quick to quote the nail colour and the nail artist on any fashion shoot, while nail colours and treatments on the catwalk draw many column inches. So what should you be wearing this season?

OPI’s Touring America collection takes you on a rollercoaster ride across the great country, with glorious names for each colour, such as Uh-Oh Roll Down the Window, My Address is “Hollywood” and Color to Diner For. For the deepest darkest nails as seen on the catwalk, go for Get In The Expresso Lane, a rich glossy dark coffee colour.

Essie, the other giant in the world of nails, has gone for ladylike prim-and-proper old-time glamour, with shades inspired by arm-candy ‘it’ bags. Tap into the nude trend with Ladylike, an opaque demure light pink shade that will add a highly polished Park Avenue gloss to any manicure.

For something a little edgier, Illamasqua’s Faux Pas is a blue-violet shade from the current Theatre of the Nameless collection. The deep rich colour is intensified with the new waxy “rubber-look” finish that will have everyone jealous. And as ever, Illamasqua’s nail varnishes apply beautifully.

Leighton Denny’s latest offering takes you into another world, with names such as Meteor Match (a simmering pale marine colour) and Your Planet Or Mine, a turquoise-marine shade with an unusual oil-on-water effect that dries to a mirror-like shine. Tap into the metallic and monochrome trends seen on the catwalk and high street with Leighton Denny’s Purely Plutonic, from the Atmospheric Collection. A cool gunmetal silver, this sophisticated shade is a go-with-anything edgy neutral.

Take the metallic trend one step further with LCN’s fabulous magnetic nail varnishes for DIY futuristic nail art. Choose one of the eight shades of the specially formulated varnish, and after applying a thick coat, hold one of the magnets over the surface of the polish for about ten seconds and watch it create the design as the polish is pushed away by the magnet to mirror the pattern.

Every season, Chanel is the absolute last word in nail colours, ever since the meteoric fame of Rouge Noir, and this season’s offering is no exception. Opt for Peridot, a glistening, shimmering hypnotic greenish-gold that changes hues with every turn of the fingers. Application of shimmers can sometimes be a little tricky, but Chanel has perfected the formula for perfect application and colour-payoff, even with just one coat. Instantly recognisable as THE shade of the season, you will be talk of nail town with this one.

Summer is drawing to a close, but the beach goddess look is a perennial favourite that never dates - we've put together a collection of the essential products to make the sun last a little bit longer.

The must-have beauty products for a sexy, bronzed look..

As summer comes to a close, beautifully tanned holiday skin is your key accessory – think Farrah Fawcett in Charlie’s Angels– but never at the expense of a healthy complexion. Recreate the season’s hottest looks with our step by step guide…

Body Bronze 101

First off, if you have to sit in the sun, safe tanning is the ultimate concern. New from Korres, the Walnut and Coconut Clear Sunscreen Oil is SPF20 and waterproof, plus it won’t leave those annoying white marks all over your body as you worship the sun. Skin health concerns means that you should really concentrate on getting that tan by using any of the multitude of the self-tan products available; for a deep glow, try Sun-Believable Tan Me Self Tan Mousse. It gives you a really dark, glamazon tanned skin, but the delicate sheen means it won’t dull the skin’s appearance so you can still get that sexy gleam. For a gradual tan that you can control, try he-Shi’s Day to Day Gradual Tan which allows you to build up your colour slowly but surely until you reach the caramel intensity you are after.

Sculpted limbs give the impression of tone, definition and length. After using an all-over tan, use an aerosol for an extra layer of tan along the sides of legs and arms to create shadow and shape. If you’re looking for a one-night wonder, then Guerlain’s Terracotta Jambes de Gazelle is what you need, if only for the fabulous name! The cooling bronzing mist enhances the colour you already have for super sleek skin that’s ready to party.

Bronzed Beauty

For easy everyday wear, try the soon-to-be-launched Invisible Zinc UV Silk Shield SPF30+. This multi-tasking foundation gives you light coverage, with the essential protection you need. Apply straight from the stick, and then pat in with fingers to blend onto the skin.

The heat can melt away even the most carefully applied make-up, however Chantecaille’s Ultra Protection SPF50 gives not only a super-strength level of sun protection, but also is a primer. Simply apply under make-up and allow to ‘dry’ before applying foundation – then watch your cosmetics last all day long.

For make-up that will show off your newly-acquired tan, Shiseido’s summer collection of eye shadows is perfect. The Luminizing Satin Eye Colour Trio Palette in Pink Sands contains just the right shades to highlight and emphasise the eyes for the beach-kissed look. Team with the budge-proof Automatic Fine Eyeliner in Night Sky, an intense cobalt blue, for night-time glamour, then complete the look with lashings of mascara. And for that finishing touch, a little Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Eclat on cheekbones and decolleté will go a long way to emphasise that hard-won summer sheen.

The Finishing Touch?

Summer hair takes its cue from the Seventies glamour, a chic version of perennial favourite beachy waves. Perfecting those tumbling curls takes a lot of practice and skill, so take the easy route and cheat with Babyliss Wave Envy; essentially oversized crimpers, they ensure sexy waves, sans frizz. Use on the mid-lengths of the hair, stopping just short of the very ends, for a natural, wavy look that can take you from beach to bar.

How to recreate that beach waves look using Babyliss Wave Envy…

When the year rolls round to summer, it’s time for a wardrobe overhaul - but what about our makeup bags? We round up the most covetable new beauty buys this season.

When the year rolls round to summer, we always think that it’s time for a wardrobe overhaul – but what about our makeup bags? Not only would we rather not be sweating off our heavy winter makeup as the temperatures rise, but a few new beauty buys not only lift the appearance but also the mood (as if we needed any more excuses!) It’s not about blowing your salary on a suitcase full of products – sometimes just one ‘staple’ product can make all the difference, whether it’s a bright eye shadow, vivid lipstick or a complexion enhancer. With this in mind we pick our top five new offerings currently gracing the beauty shelves…

Our top five new offerings currently gracing the beauty shelves…

Givenchy Le Prismissime Eye Colour Palette in Acid Lights

If the rather fetching neon orange and black case hasn’t seduced you already, its Rubik’s cube palette of eye-popping summer brights are sure to give your peepers the ‘wow’ factor, with vivid blues, greens, canary yellow and disco purple as well as a rich bronze shade, for gorgeous ‘lids all summer long!

NARS Illuminator in Copacabana

One of the newest shades to be added to the NARS Illuminator range, Copacabana creates a stunning pearlescent pink shade that’s great for all skin types. It can be dabbed directly onto cheeks as a highlighter or mixed with your foundation or moisturiser for a subtle soft glow that literally lasts for hours.

Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder

Part of the famous Terracotta Bronze range, this baked bronze shade adds a wonderful sun-kissed hue to the apples of the cheeks and anywhere else! It also has a moisturising effect, as its sleek bronze case with a handy mirror is another plus point- you will whipping it out of your handbag every five minutes.

Models Own and WAH Nails Smash-Up Polish in Black

Crackle polish is getting more and more popular, and this stark shade of black is perfect either over a clear base coat or a contrasting neon shade. Just paint it on as you would a normal polish, and watch it come apart like smashed glass. Also available in silver.

Illamasqua Lipstick in Atomic

Whenever I sport this vibrant lipstick, the compliments always come flooding in. Part of Illamasqua’s new Toxic Nature collection, it creates a shocking shade of violet with pink undertones, while its highly pigmented almost clay-like texture allows for easy application and stellar staying power. (N.B. these lipsticks can snap easily so apply with care!)

This spring sees a delightful array of disco brights, pretty florals, metallics and underwater-inspired makeup shades. It’s time to spring clean and spruce up your make-up bag!

Bold and Bright

This season’s 70’s inspired makeup is loud and proud – not least so on the lips. Ditch the traditional red and choose from sizzling orange with Illamasqua’s Flare, hot pink with By Terry’s Torrid Rose, or bright purple using M.A.C’s Pro Longwear Lipcreme in Goes and Goes. For a vibrant cheek colour Topshop’s Lip and Cheek Tint in Bitten Berry creates a gorgeous raspberry glow, while Benefit’s new Bella Bamba Blusher is a sparkling pink powder, which when applied on the apples of the cheeks transforms a face from dowdy to disco in a simple brush sweep! And for eyes, try Jemma Kidd’s Crushed Jewel Creme Duo in Lolite which contains a cream shadow and accompanying loose glitter shadow both in a brilliant royal blue (not for the faint hearted!)

Go bold and bright with Illamasqua and M.A.C lipsticks, eye colour from Jemma Kidd and cheeks by Topshop and Benefit's Bella Bamba

Fields of Flowers

For those who prefer to welcome in spring with traditional floral shades, this season’s beauty counters will not disappoint. Dr. Hauschka’s Lavender Dreams Eye Palette will make eyes dazzle in lilac and dark lavender, while Tom Ford’s Lipstick in Pink Dusk creates a beautiful tea rose colour – perfect for enhancing smaller lips. Smashbox’s Cream Cheek Duo in Blushing/Peony gives cheeks a healthy beach glow, while the Succulent Lip Twin in Poppy Red from Pixi is a tint and gloss in one, and when applied creates a luscious shade of strawberry. And when it comes to nails, Butter London nail polish in Teddy Girl is a perfect carnation pink, whilst Précision’s Sugar Plum Fairy polish is guaranteed to beautify neglected, weather-beaten mits.

Choose pretty beauty with Dr. Hauschka''s palette, Smashbox's blush duo, lips from Tom Ford and Pixi, and nails by Butter London

Treasure Trove

If can’t afford lots of pretty jewellery to adorn yourself with, why not opt for some metallic make-up instead? Forget tacky ‘futuristic’ silver, and instead go for antique brassy hues such as NARS’s Desperado Nail Polish and Estée Lauder’s Pure Nail Colour in Shimmering Bronze. For the eyes, nothing is quite as striking as simple line of gold across the upper lash-line such Laura Mercier’s Golden Thread Liquid Eyeliner, or for more full-on gold eyes, Belmacz’s Blitz gold leaf eyeshadow will certainly turn heads. Lips can also get a touch of precious metal with M.A.C’s new Wonderwoman lipstick in Heroine – a sumptuous, shimmering bronze.

Get glitzy with nail colour from NARS and Estée Lauder, eye liner by Laura Mercier, and lips from Belmacz and M.A.C

Under the Sea

Fans of The Little Mermaid will be pleased to hear that many of spring’s beauty launches are inspired by all the colours of the ocean. Givenchy’s Le Prisme Yeux Mono No.11 eyeshadow contains four shimmering true blues, while the Sea Turtle Palette from Chantecaille eatures a deep charcoal green and warm sand shades for eyes, along with a sparkling coral for cheeks (plus 5% of proceeds will be donated to help save the endangered Giant Sea Turtle.) And for ocean-inspired nails you can opt for sparkling eye-catching shades such as Butter London Nail Polish in Dosh; Chanel Le Vernis Nail Polish in Black Pearl and OPI’s Austin-tacious. Even Ariel herself would have approved!

Go under the sea with Chantecaille's palette, vivid eye shadows by Givenchy and nail colours by Chanel, Butter London and OPI

Spring beauty trends include bright, bold eye shadows and an abundance of flashy lipcolours - it's a welcome change from winter's soft, subdued palette...

The new season brings with it a delicious selection of new trends to play with; bright, bold eye shadows and an abundance of flashy lipcolours make a welcome change from winter’s soft, subdued palette; yes, we’ve definitely left new austerity and toned-down looks behind! If you were rather enjoying pared-back catwalk beauty, never fear – this season the focus is on your locks; think sleek, chic updos with glossy shine. Alternatively opt for hair en XXL, with voluminous curled styles that scream glamour. Grab your palettes and tongs, and get ready for fun!

Creative Curls

What better style to sport with this season’s slick 1970′s silhouette than a voluminous head of sexy curls? On the catwalks, curls came with a side-parting and a bohemian twist at Badgley Mischka and Sonia Rykiel or with a nod to pin-up glamour at Christian Dior and Giles. Meanwhile models at Julien Macdonald showed off brushed-out maxi-curls with oodles of volume at the crown. We’re heating up the tongs and digging out the heated rollers…

Get The Look: Get larger-than-life hair, by starting with your roots; boost the volume with Tommy Guns Miraculous Volumising Mousse or for an extra lift, try wonder product The ALL NIGHTER Styling Powder. Shake on a little of the dry shampoo to absorb excess oil and bulk up your roots. Whether you choose to create pretty ringlets with heated tongs or a vintage-inspired style with rollers, make sure the style stays in place with Sexy Hair Spray & Stay All-Nighter Hairspray.

Curls get glamorous on the catwalks at Badgley Mischka, Giles, Sonia Rykiel, Christian Dior and Julien Macdonald

Sleek Simplicity

Keep hairstyling simple this season by experimenting with the classic updo – it’s the easiest look to pull off and means that you can go from bed head to ready in double-quick time. Forget the chignon or the ballerina bun, the updo is worn with a twist for Spring/Summer 2011; in London, Jonathan Saunders added interest with a miniature side-swept quiff, whilst in Paris, models at Yves Saint Laurent wore hair twisted at both sides for a sleek style with a touch of severity. At Oscar de la Renta, the big, 1960′s style bun was revamped for 2011 with a slicked down centre parting and at Versace, a black, wet-look adornment was added. Gucci‘s glamorous garments took centre stage in Milan, worn with a twisted variation on the simple ponytail.

Get The Look: Prepare your tresses with Shine On leave-in hair treatment by John Masters Organics. This intensive mask will ensure hair gleams with health and glossy shine. Smooth away fly-aways and banish frizz with Tara Smith’s Base Coat Serum; this clever product acts as a primer for hair, plus it’s free of parabens and chemical nasties too. Once you’ve worked out what your twist on the updo will be, spritz with a generous helping of Fudge Cement; this spray will ensure your style stays in place all day long.

The revisited updo for 2011, on the catwalk at Jonathan Saunders, Yves Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta, Versace and Gucci

Bright Eyes

Colour is, as the saying goes, having a moment. It’s definitely time to ban black, as this season bright shades from vibrant orange and intense blue to fluorescent neon tones took the catwalk by storm. And there’s no need to limit experimenting with colour to your wardrobe; there’s a whole palette of eyeshadow shades to choose from too! Go for cool greens and blues, as seen at Mary Katrantzou, Michael van der Ham and Oscar de la Renta; they’re the ‘safe’ options when it comes to bright shadows. On the other hand, you’ll really make an impact with a sherbet yellow shade and they’re surprisingly flattering too, banishing dark circles and ‘waking up’ the eye area in an instant. Don’t forget a slick of mascara to finish the look and add polish. Choose a sunflower tone, as seen at Louise Gray or a green-yellow, shown here at Christian Dior, and experiment to see what works best with your complexion.

Get The Look: Urban Decay’s Deluxe Eyeshadows in Adore and in Graffiti make bright shadow a cinch, as they’re highly-pigmented and allow you to build up layers of colour for a more intense look. Models Own Loose Eye Shadow in Neon Yellow is another favourite product which makes a dramatic change from boring brown and taupe shades. Pop on your LBD and pair with a matte cerise lipcolour for a fashion-forward evening look. If you’re a little more colour-shy, try a lighter shadow, such as Yves Saint Laurent Ombre Solo Eyeshadow in Topaz Blue or a subtle slick of bright eyeliner – we love NARS Eyeliner Stylo in Blue Barou.

Rocking acid bright eyeshadows at Mary Katrantzou, Michael van der Ham, Oscar de la Renta, Louise Gray and Christian Dior

A Pop of Colour

The simplest way to join this season’s bright colour gang has to be choosing a bold lipcolour. If you’re feeling even more imaginative and adventurous, we suggest doubling up, and sporting bright lipstick AND colourful clothes or eyecolour. You certainly won’t go unnoticed, and you definitely will look you know your fashion stuff. This spring, back away from traditional postbox red and choose something a little different. How about a hot pink, as seen at Jil Sander and Diane von Furstenberg? Or maybe an orange or coral tone, a la Fendi and Marni? If you really must wear scarlet, try smudging on with your fingers or experimenting with a lipstain for a more matte, modern look.

Get The Look: Fuschia lipcolour is officially the new red, so invest now! We like RMK Irresistible Lips in Holographic Cherry Red, but who can possibly resist the decadent luxury of YSL’s gold packaging? Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture in Soft Fuschia is part of Stefano Pilati’s cosmetic collection for Spring 2011 and it’s packed full of moisturising ingredients, so it’s a wise investment too. Another lipstick to splurge on for this season is the Tom Ford True Coral Lip Color. This one is most definitely credit rather than cash, but the fresh orange tone is oh-so-on-trend…. You’re guaranteed to get tonnes of wear from NARS Semi-Matte Lipstick in Jungle Red; it’s a savvy buy with a sexy, modern finish.

Dark lips, smoky eyes and pale skin can only mean one thing: vampish make-up is back for autumn. We got the top tips from gothic beauty experts on how to create the look.

Vampy, gothic beauty brings drama...

Whether you call it the Twilight effect or the return of the vamp, there’s no denying that gothic chic is back for autumn. And with a raft of vampire-inspired TV shows on the small screen, there’s no shortage of inspiration. On the red carpet too, the look is proving popular, with Megan Fox, Dita von Teese, and Peaches Geldof all working the dark lips and smoky eyes combo.

Done well, the goth look can be beautiful. Done wrong, however, and you’re in Marylin Manson impersonator territory. So how do you get it right? We asked Twilight head make-up artist and gothic beauty expert Jeanne van Phue to show us how it’s done.

The woman responsible for making sure the Twilight vamps look flawless – regardless of late nights – Jeanne says that good skincare is the route to perfect, pale vampire skin. “The key to creating any make-up look is taking care of your skin,” she advises. “Don’t go to sleep with your make-up on, cleanse your skin thoroughly, use a toner and apply moisturiser before bed. Applying a foundation on flaky skin is unattractive and a patchy complexion doesn’t look vampy – it just looks awful.”

Use concealer to cover blemishes and dark circles and follow with a little foundation to ensure your skin looks pristine. Try Revlon Colorstay Mineral Mousse Foundation for a natural look. “In creating the vampire look I was asked to keep them pale,” adds Jeanne. “I also used eye shadow on Rob Pattinson and lip colour, otherwise he would have looked very washed out. I also allowed some natural colour to come through the make-up on his cheeks. I used SKII Air Touch OP1 foundation and added highlighter on his brow and cheek bones to give him a more luminous look.”

“You have to bear in mind that there’s a fine line between glamorous and frightening, especially when it comes to eye make-up,” comments MAC make-up artist Vimi Joshi. “Don’t make your smoky eye too messy and remember to use a little blush – that’s what will stop you looking like a real vampire or teenage goth.” “Whether using powder or cream shadows on your eyes, you need to first apply a primer,” advises Jeanne. “This will keep the application of your shadow on longer and prevent the shadow from creasing.

Apply ivory or bisque powder shadow such as Estee Lauder Pure Color Eyeshadow in Vanilla, as a base for the entire eyelid. In the crease lightly apply a natural light brown shadow and blend up to the brow bone. Next, apply black liquid eyeliner – try FACE Stockholm ink Precision Liner – over the shadow, and draw a thin line across the eye, winging it out as you get to the outer corner. Paint a thin line on to the bottom lid, also close to the lash line before going over it with a dark brown or black eyeshadow. For added drama, line the inner rim of your eye with a soft textured black kohl pencil before coating lashes with black mascara such as MAC Zoom Fast Black Lash mascara in Deepest Black.” Up the glamour stakes with a couple of false lashes or go all out with a full set. Girls With Attitude do a huge range of false eyelashes, including the ultra glamorous Vamp.

“I used lipstick on all of our vampires, including Rob, Kellan and Jackson,” says Jeanne, “and it’s essential for this look or you run the risk of looking washed out. I used Benefit Silky Finish Lipstick in Ms. Behavin’, mixed with lip balm, on them but for a really vampy look; try a dark red.” Miners Lipstick in Vixen is ideal. Begin by lining lips with a pencil matching your chosen colour. “Apply your lipstick top and bottom,” says Jeanne, “then add a lighter colour in the centre of the lower lip .This will create the illusion of fuller lips.” Finally, add a little blush but as Jeanne emphasises, you need to keep it pale. “I didn’t use blush on the Twilight vampires,” she says, “because they had to look pale and bloodless. If you’re going to use it, make it a pale pink or peach on the apple of your cheek and blend out and up into the temple.” Try MAC Powder Blush in Pinch O’ Peach. Make sure you use it sparingly though; the contrast between the pale skin and darker blush can make you look a bit clownish if you’re not careful.
