The Race of the Runway

Between the size zero debate and the lack of racial diversity on the catwalk, it seems that fashion brands need to tackle the challenge of casting - and the impact of the models they choose on society.

This isn’t about filling a quota. It’s about getting global brands to recognise that when they send an all-white cast down the runway, they are promoting an ideal of beauty that does not include the majority of the world’s population. Read more: Business of Fashion.

The Other Voices

Laura Bates’ initiative has opened up the debate about the instances of sexism that occur every day, ensuring that the issue is (finally!) beginning to be taken seriously.

everydaysexism1

When I started the Everyday Sexism Project a year ago, I never imagined that by now it would have attracted some 25,000 entries and be about to spread to 15 countries. Nor even that I’d be writing about it in the Guardian – or that this would be the latest in a chain of articles that has encompassed the Times of India, Gulf News, Grazia South Africa, the Toronto Standard, French Glamour and the LA Times. New Music Now

Could this be the new Björk? The début record from Disa is a little bit Fever Ray, a little bit Kate Bush - and comparisons with the other famous Icelandic songstress are inevitable. We like.

Nordic solo artist Disa shows off her otherworldly vocal range while dancing across archive imagery of solar flares in the video for her first single, “Sun,” directed by the artist with photography from Mathias Døcker. Having left her native Reykjavik for the music scene of Copenhagen, the 25-year-old singer is releasing her debut track on Danish label Tigerspring. Read more: Nowness.

The Charm of a Chair

Celebrating the great and the good of the art, architecture and design worlds, the Designs of the Year awards are always interesting and inspiring. The 2013 winners have now been announced, and one of our favourites has to be Konstantin Grcic’s angular Medici Chair - designed for Italian brand Mattiazzi. Although it might not look quite as cosy or comfortable as a snug armchair, Grcic reliably informs us that the Medici’s “generous dimensions give it an embracing confidence” - perfect for reclining while reading the papers.

The Medici Chair is lovingly crafted in a choice of three woods - including one suitable for use outdoors. The poshest picnic chair ever? You can buy Konstantin Grcic’s winning design online at The Conran Shop.

Love her or loathe her - Margaret Thatcher’s impact on politics, feminism and society in the UK is still felt today. And the commentary is likely to continue long after her state funeral.
